"Unemployed" WPA American Scene Social Realism Mid 20th Century Modern
By William Gropper
Located in New York, NY
"Unemployed" WPA American Scene Social Realism Mid 20th Century Modern William Gropper (1898 - 1977) Unemployed 20 x 16 inches Oil on canvas, 1937 Signed lower right Provenance: Estate of the artist Bio Throughout his life, William Gropper used his artistic talents to protest social injustice. Born in New York City, he grew up there in poverty and left high school to work as a dishwasher and delivery boy. He eventually began a career in art and was able to study with Robert Henri and George Bellows from 1912 to 1915. He adopted their realistic painting style, and his own work expressed sympathy for common laborers and outrage at society's ills. In 1919 Gropper established a reputation as a political cartoonist working for the New York Tribune. His blunt, forceful style attracted the attention of other publications, and he provided illustrations and cartoons for a variety of magazines, from the left-wing New Masses to mainstream Vanity Fair. Like many social realist artists of the 1930s, Gropper supported liberal political causes, depicting subjects such as the plight of migrant laborers and striking factory workers. In his first gallery exhibition in 1936 at ACA Galleries, Gropper's work was so well received by critics, collectors, and artists that the following year he had two one-man exhibitions at ACA Galleries. In 1937, Gropper traveled west on a Guggenheim Fellowship and visited the Dust Bowl and the Hoover and Grand Coulee Dams, sketching studies for a series of paintings and a mural he painted for the Department of the Interior. That same year he had paintings purchased by both the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art. Gropper exhibited at the 1939 New York World's Fair, Whitney Museum of American Art (1924-55), Art Institute of Chicago (1935-49), Carnegie International (1937-50), Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (1939-48), and National Academy of Design (1945-48). He was a founder of the Artists Equity Association and member of the National Institute of Arts and Letters. From 1940 to 1945 William Gropper was preoccupied with anti-Nazi cartoons...

Ship Breaking
By Willard Dixon
Located in Burlingame, CA
'Ship Breaking' by Willard Dixon. These paintings are generally taken from small black and white newspaper photos from Willard Dixon’s daily reading of the news. Dixon changes the images somewhat by cropping them, taking things out, adding color, etc. But the image is definitely something seen originally by someone else. “I must say”, says Dixon, “I have rather strong feelings about these images myself. I see them at least in part as an homage to the intrepid photographers on the front lines who are telling truth to the world about what’s actually going on out there.” Willard Dixon Born: Kansas City MO, 1942 Education: Art Students League, New York, NY Cornell University Brooklyn Museum School San Francisco Art Institute, M.F.A. 1969 Awards and Commissions N.E.A. Two Women Gesturing - Contemporary Painting Inspired by Flemish Masterworks
By Amy Hill
Located in Chicago, IL
My paintings are updates of works from earlier eras. I choose these eras because of my stylistic kinship with their artists, which allows me to carry on a kind of dialogue with them. Each era brings up a particular theme that I translate to the present day. Using portraiture I choose poses, gestures and fashion to make social, psychological and anthropological statements. Humor emerges through the juxtaposition of modern day fashion with classic poses and compositions. In addressing Renaissance works, because many of the figures from this era are depicted in poses of prayer or worship, I paint my subjects worshipping secular things such as designer labels and digital devices. - Amy Hill Amy Hill Two Women Gesturing oil on canvas 42h x 32w in 106.68h x 81.28w cm AHL001 AMY HILL Education 1977 New York University, New York, NY 1976 Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA BFA Solo Exhibitions 2018 Front Room Gallery, New York, NY “Back to Nature” 2017 Pulse Art Fair, Miami, FL with Front Room Gallery 2016 Lois Lambert Gallery, Santa Monica, CA 2016 Front Room Gallery, Brooklyn, NY "Young and Innocent” 2013 Front Room Gallery, Brooklyn, NY “The Age of Delightenment” 2010 Andre Zarre Gallery, New York, NY 2009 Andre Zarre Gallery, New York, NY 2008 McCaig Welles Gallery, Brooklyn, NY 2007 Ann Nathan Gallery, Chicago, IL 2005 Jack the Pelican Gallery, Brooklyn, NY 2004 Roq La Rue Gallery, Seattle, WA 2003 Saville Gallery, Cumberland, MD 2001 Clementine Gallery, New York, NY 1996 Curcio Spector Gallery, New York, NY 1995 University of California, Berkeley, San Francisco, CA 1994 Sunnen Gallery, New York, NY 1991 Queens Museum at the Bullova Center, Queens, NY 1991 Tegenbosch Gallery, Amsterdam, Holland Selected Group Exhibitions 2018 Elizabeth Foundation, New York, NY. “American Psyche” 2018 One Art Space, New York, NY “Untitled” 2018 Philip Slein Gallery, St. Louis “People, Places, Things” 2017 New York Art Lab 2017, Osaka, Japan 2107 490 Atlantic, Brooklyn, NY “American Pie” 2016 The Parlour Bushwick, Brooklyn, NY 2015 Booth Gallery, New York, NY 2014 Porter Contemporary, New York, NY 2014 St. Paul’s Church, New York, NY 2014 Andre Zarre Gallery, New York, NY 2014 Front Room Gallery, New York, NY 2011 Ann Nathan Gallery, Chicago, Ill 2011 MA Doran Gallery, Tulsa, OK 2009 Denise Bibro, New York, NY 2008 Bernarducci Meisel Gallery, New York, NY 2008 Nohra Haime Gallery, New York, NY “Peopled People” 2007 Ann Nathan Gallery, Chicago, IL 2007 Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild, Woodstock, NY 2007 Like the Spice, Brooklyn, NY 2006 McCaig Welles, Brooklyn, NY 2006 Magaret Bodell Gallery, Cornwall, CN 2006 NYU Small Works Show, New York, NY 2005 Ambrosino Gallery, N Miami, FL “Gods and Monsters” 2005 Fe Gallery, Pittsburgh, Pa “Fear” 2004 B-Side Gallery, New York, NY 2004 MF Gallery NewYork, NY “Freak Show” 2004 Krasdale Foods Art Gallery, White Plains, NY 2002 NYU, New York, NY “Small Works"2001 Mark Moore Gallery, Santa Monica, Ca. 2001 Castle Gallery, New Rochelle, NY “Bogus” 2000 Upstate Art, Phoenicia, NY “Nature Made” 2000 Nexus Contemporary Center, Atlanta, Ga. “Rememberance of Things Past” 1999 DFN Gallery, New York, NY 1999 HBO Offices, New York, NY 1998 Battersea Art Center, London, UK ‘Sickly Sweet’ 1996 Barbara Moran Fine Arts, Egermont, Mass. 1994 The New Museum, New York, NY ‘Bad Girls’ 1993 Art in General, New York, NY ‘Good and Plenty...
