Levoy Exil Art

Haitian, b. 1944

Levoy Exil was born in Fermate, just above Port-au-Prince on December 7, 1944, or in Soissons-la-Montagne on October 19, 1944, depending on which book you consult. He was one of the original members of Saint Soleil, a community of peasant artists that was organized by the Haitian artist Tiga, and Maude Robart, a writer and painter herself. Saint Soleil was located in the mountains above LaBoule, at Soisson-La- Montagne. It provided the means and encouragement for not only painters but poets, writers, craftspeople, singers, dancers, sculptors and musicians to practice their arts. The movement received international attention after the visit in 1975 of Andre Malraux, who was so impressed with the place that he devoted a chapter in his last book, "L'Intemporel," to Saint Soleil. Exil is also one of the five members of "Cinq Soleil," the group of artists that regrouped in the late 1980s.

Synthesism: Solitude 2 - Large Original Abstract Artwork on Canvas
Located in Los Angeles, CA
Abstract minimalist artist Jason DeMeo creates artworks that work to serve as a meditation for the viewer, drawing them toward the timeless concepts of truth, beauty, and goodness. His original paintings accentuate the ultimate appreciation of medium and form, inspired by everlasting principles of simplicity, balance, symmetry, order, and harmony. DeMeo created this large one-of-a-kind 74-inch high by 48-inch wide painting using acrylic paint, oil pastel and 24k gold leaf which creates unique textures throughout the artwork. It is signed on the back. It is stretched, wired, and ready to hang. Framing is not required. Free local Los Angeles delivery. Affordable U.S. and global shipping available. A certificate of authenticity issued by the art gallery is included. Originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, DeMeo is now based in Central Florida. Through his work, he seeks to express universal themes by bringing his eclectic personal experiences, philosophies, and emotions to the forefront. He has a deep belief in the power of art to bring transformation to both spaces and people. DeMeo’s artworks, packed with positive affirmations, have been collected across the United States. DeMeo focuses on exploring a concept that he has coined Synthesism. It stems from the definition of the word synthesis: “the combining of often diverse elements into a coherent whole.” This theme of blending, combining, and remixing in many disciplines, especially music, architecture, and even culture leading to the growth of community is captured in his work. Modernism constructs, Post-modernism deconstructs, and Synthesism combines. Each of DeMeo’s artworks includes elements of precision and organic creation. The sharp lines offer a balancing contrast to details of drips, splashes, or scrapings that bring life to his work. DeMeo carefully layers each color while keeping attention to the relationships between them and the weight of each brushstroke. Every artwork offers intrinsic details and textures at a closer glance. Current movement influences include Abstract Expressionism, Bauhaus, Conceptualism, Gestalt, Human Centered Design, Wabi-Sabi, Black Mountain College. Current artistic influences include Helen Frankenthaler, Joan Mitchell, Robert Rauschenberg, Franz Kline, Cy Twombly, Pierre Soulages, Tomie Ohtake...

Gold Leaf

Rajasthan - large, bold, gestural abstract, expressionist, acrylic on canvas
By Graham Coughtry
Located in Bloomfield, ON
John Graham Coughtry’s ethereal, expressive abstract portrait of a dancer ‘en jette’ is rendered in the exotic spice colours of India-ochre and orange. Rajasthan is the largest state in Northern India. This remarkably beautiful, lush, almost impressionistic painting is an excellent example of Coughtry’s masterful use of rich colours. “I… think Coughtry is an extraordinarily good painter and have had in mind to try to get a good painting by him ever since I saw the group of his things at the Venice Biennale last year.” MoMA Director Alfred H. Barr Born in Saint-Lambert, Quebec (1931-1999) Coughtry learned to paint at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts School. Later, after graduating from the Ontario College of Art, he used a travelling scholarship to live in Ibiza, Spain. Returning to Toronto, he worked as a film graphic designer for CBC Television. He held his first exhibition in 1955 with artist Michael...

Morning Conversation
Located in Greenwich, CT
Canadian, b. 1960 Elizabeth Higgins describes herself as an abstract figurative and landscape painter. Everything around her serves as a potential subject, an inspiration to begin a painting. Fidelity to the landscape, the figure, or the still life is relative, as she isn’t interested in literal depictions; instead, it’s the abstract relationships of these shapes and colors, the abstract pictorial design. Her work is rooted in the tradition stemming from Courbet, Derain, Bonnard, Matisse, Morandi, German Expressionism, the Canadian Group of Seven, to her artist-teachers Paul Resika, Robert de Niro Sr., and finally, the contemporary artist, Peter Doig. Her artistic evolution stretches across this continuum. It is the “in-between”, the hovering between representation and abstraction, that interests her, not the labeling effect of details; instead, she aims directly at the spirit of the painting – of making something come to life. John Goodrich wrote in her catalog essay, “Elizabeth Higgins’ direct brushwork and simplified forms suggest an energy, but crucially, reveal a painter who knows the power of color…” Elizabeth Higgins was born in Toronto, Canada, in 1960. As a Helena Rubenstein Award recipient, Higgins earned her MFA from Parsons School of Design, where she studied with Leland Bell, Paul Resika, Albert Kresch and Robert deNiro...
