Mathilde Schaefer Modern Studio Pot with Horse Motif
Mathilde Schaefer Modern Studio Pot with Horse Motif

Mathilde Schaefer Modern Studio Pot with Horse Motif

By Mathilde Schaefer

Located in Phoenix, AZ

Beautiful and whimsical ceramic vase handmade by celebrated artist Mathilde Schaefer, wife of noted Arizona artist Lew Davis. This unusual and rare terra cotta vase with a glazed turquoise interior (and other glazed portions: manes, tails, hooves and eyes), is dated 1949 on the bottom in pencil and marked "Desert Kilns Arizona." Also inscribed in pencil on the bottom: “Merry Christmas from Bill Benton.” We are not certain who the recipient was but the vase was owned and given as a gift by Bill Benton, a Senator from Connecticut who wintered in Arizona. He was a friend of Frank Lloyd Wright in the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s when Arizona and Phoenix in particular had a very active art community. Known in Arizona in the 1960s as an instructor of pottery and sculpture at the Desert School of Art in Scottsdale and also as the wife of artist Lew Davis, she was born in New York City and studied with Raoul Josset and Walter Lemcke. In 1938, she began exhibiting at the Art Institute of Chicago. She married Davis and they moved to Scottsdale, Arizona where she maintained a studio. Her sculpture is in numerous collections including that of International Business Machines...

Plate Bowl Centerpiece Tableware Platter Decorated Wall Dish Majolica Painted

By deBlona

Located in Recanati, IT

This exclusive ceramic plate is handmade and hand-painted in Italy following the original Renaissance painting technique, unchanged over time, which we observe to the letter: it is decorated in majolica hand-painted in duotone of black and golden yellow, showing an elegant decorative motif of the Deruta tradition which is inspired by a tile found in a local church and suitably reworked in a modern key. The wide brim, with a raised edge and profiled with a finely painted modular ornament, is characterized by an extensive decorative border band where the traditional peacock feather motifs are represented, decorated with delicate shades of golden yellow shaded with cerium white. Naturalistic decorations are depicted inside the large cable, arranged in specular and radial symmetry which branches off from a central hexagonal element and articulates around the circumference, forming elegant golden yellow raceme motifs that stand out against a black background. Our majolica plate can be used as a fancy centerpiece or it can be hung as a decorative wall dish...

Decorative Plate Centerpiece Wall Dish Fireclay Warm White Materic Finish, Italy

Located in Recanati, IT

Decorative plate in fireclay, entirely handmade in Italy. The incredibly material finish has been left natural to highlight the beauty and uniqueness of this clay. The whiteness of its color is reminiscent of something ancient, consumed by the sea and the wind, the same sensation you have to the touch. A timeless object that can be used as a centerpiece or hung on the wall. Dimensions : D 52 cm, H 6 cm The sculptural plate draws inspiration from one of the most characteristic products of luster ceramics of the Italian sixteenth century: the "coppe abborchiate" which were embellished with 24Kt gold and ruby to obtain unique and incomparable reflections. Today Gabriele Mengoni artist, sculptor, expert ceramist, fascinated by this rediscovered technique, experiments with new forms and modern...
