A striking set of four sculptural dining chairs in solid pine, made in Europe in the 1970s, with distinctive keyhole cut-outs in the backs and bold, architectural silhouettes. The warm honey patina and expressive grain give them a strong presence, balancing rustic craftsmanship with an almost Brutalist expression. Design The backrests are the stars of these chairs: each one has a stylised keyhole cut-out under a softly contoured top rail. The motif gives the set a strong identity that recalls Alpine and Tyrolean furniture traditions, while the thick, simplified forms push it towards a more modern, sculptural look. The construction is robust and honest, with solid seats, sturdy angled legs and traditional joinery. The pine has developed a rich honey tone over the years, with small variations in colour and surface that add to its authenticity. In the interior These chairs make a real statement around a minimal dining table, where their sculptural backs can fully stand out. They pair beautifully with a travertine or limewashed wood table, linen textiles in soft neutral colours, and ceramic vessels and other organic forms. In a more modern interior they act as a warm counterpoint, and they are a natural fit for wabi-sabi, Japandi, chalet and contemporary rustic spaces that embrace natural materials and imperfection. Style references The set belongs to the tradition of carved Alpine chairs such as the Brettstuhl, reinterpreted through the heavy, simplified forms of 1970s European design. Fans of the sculptural pine furniture of that decade, of the solid wood designs of Pierre Chapo and Rainer Daumiller, or of Scandinavian pine furniture will appreciate their mix of folk tradition and modern form.
