Oil paintings on cardboard gained popularity in the late 19th century, offering a convenient and affordable alternative to canvas for artists and enabling greater artistic experimentation. Many renowned artists explored this medium. Oil on paper was often prepared with a layer of primer or gesso to create a stable surface for the paint and to prevent the oils from soaking directly into the paper.
Johann Georg Meyer von Bremen commonly known as Meyer von Bremen (1813-1886), was a German genre painter specializing in Biblical, peasant, and family scenes. He was a pupil of the Dusseldorf Academy where he largely painted religious and historical subjects. In 1840, after traveling in Bavaria and Switzerland, he began to develop pleasant genre scenes focused on incidents from popular life, especially among the Hessian peasantry, and the portrayal of childhood and family for which he became known. He spent the remainder of his career in Berlin, becoming a Professor at the Academy in 1863. He was also a member of the Amsterdam Academy and the Order of Leopold...

Peter Robert Keil was born to an artist blacksmith father whom he lost very early in his childhood during the Second World War. During the end phase of the war, Keil's mother, also an artistically talented woman, took her son and struggled her way to West Berlin where they settled. This is where Peter Robert Keil grew up in the working-class neighborhood of Berlin-Wedding and where he discovered his interest in painting – particularly in expressionistic artists and in Pablo Picasso's work. From 1954 on, the East Berlin-based painter Otto Nagel became his mentor and taught him first craft skills and painting techniques. In 1954, he began his traineeship as an artist metal worker and between 1959 and 1961, he studied at the University of Arts in Berlin. When the Berlin Wall was built, he lost contact with his mentor Otto Nagel and from the early 60s on, Keil started to spend more and more time abroad. During his studies at the University of Arts in Berlin, he came in contact with numerous other artists who later became influential artists of their generation, like for example Georg Baselitz, Eugen Schönebeck, Markus Lüpertz and Joachim Schmettau. During his time in Mallorca, he also met with Joan Miró in his studio several times. From the early 60s on, Keil established studios in Paris, London, Berlin and in the US. Today he mainly lives and works in Zimmerau (Bavaria, Germany), Berlin and Los Angeles.

Ferdinand Wagner II (German, 1847-1927) was the son of Passau Ferdinand Wagner Senior, a teacher at a vocational art school who began training him professionally at a young age. After traveling to Italy in 1867-1868, he continued with his art studies at The Munich Academy of Arts led by Peter Von Cornelius and Julius Schnorr Von Carolsfeld. Wagner II was influenced by the Munich School of master painters and by his art teacher, Karl von Piloty, who had been teaching at the Munich Art Academy since 1856. Piloty’s approach to historical paintings was influenced by the French art academic Paul Delaroche and by the fine artworks by Rubens and the Venetians.

Sand cast bronze, with old verdigris patination and painstaking detail to the composition, the scales and twin heads of Horus. The energy expressed in beautiful coiled, tensile form. Bronze castings have a long tradition in Berlin, the most renown being the Aktien-Gesellschaft Gladenbeck that operated from 1851 until 1926. Horus, a god in the form of a falcon whose right eye was the sun or morning star, representing power and quintessence, and whose left eye was the moon or evening star, representing healing. Falcon cults, which were in evidence from late predynastic times, were widespread in Egypt. This coiled serpent form is equally reminiscent of Nehebkau a primordial snake god in ancient Egyptian mythology. Ultimately considered a powerful, benevolent and protective deity, he is described as a companion of the sun god Re.
