Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene – Antique German Chromolithograph, c. 1895 This striking late 19th-century German chromolithograph depicts the moving biblical moment in which the risen Christ appears to Mary Magdalene following the Resurrection. Christ is shown standing in quiet majesty, halo radiant with divine light, His right hand placed gently over His heart in a gesture of compassion and reassurance. Mary Magdalene kneels before Him with deep devotion, her long flowing hair and rich garments emphasizing both humility and reverence. The composition is set within a tranquil garden landscape, traditionally associated with the Resurrection narrative, reinforcing the spiritual symbolism of rebirth, forgiveness, and divine mercy. Christ’s red tunic and deep blue mantle radiate warmth and solemnity, while the soft golden halo creates a luminous focal point that draws the eye immediately to His face. This scene, known in Christian tradition as *Noli Me Tangere* (“Touch Me Not”), represents one of the most emotionally powerful moments of the Gospel story. It became a highly favored subject in Catholic devotional art of the late 19th century, commonly displayed in prayer corners, chapels, religious schools, and family interiors. Produced using high-quality chromolithography, this print achieves exceptional painterly depth, with delicate shading in the flesh tones, refined folds in the drapery, and beautifully layered landscape colors. The gold highlights of the halos and the saturated reds and blues are especially well preserved, reflecting the superior production standards of German devotional publishers during this period. This is a visually commanding and spiritually meaningful artwork, highly desirable for Catholic collectors, sacred art interiors, and serious devotional art collections. CONDITION REPORT Good antique condition overall. Light, even age toning to the paper consistent with late 19th-century chromolithographs. Minor edge wear and very gentle corner softening visible upon close inspection. No major stains, no tears, and no restoration observed. Colors remain strong and vivid. FRAMING TIPS This print will display beautifully in a classic gilt or softly antiqued gold wooden frame to echo the sacred halo tones. For a more restrained interior, a dark walnut or black lacquer frame with a wide ivory mat and museum glass will create a dramatic devotional presentation. European Owls – Antique Hand-Colored Bird Engraving, Vogel IX, c.1800

Located in Langweer, NL

European Owls – Antique Hand-Colored Bird Engraving, Vogel IX, c.1800 This finely executed hand-colored engraving presents six European owl species arranged in comparative study, issued as Plate IX (Vogel IX / Oiseaux IX). The plate belongs to the late 18th–early 19th century tradition of scientific ornithology, in which birds were illustrated side by side to support identification, classification, and study. The owls depicted correspond to species recognized today as the Long-eared Owl (Asio otus), shown prominently with its upright posture and distinct ear tufts; the Tawny Owl (Strix aluco), represented in both its grey-brown form and its warmer rufous color morph; the Short-eared Owl (Asio flammeus), identifiable by its paler facial disc and reduced ear tufts; the small but expressive Little Owl (Athene noctua); and a larger, more powerfully built owl commonly identified as the Eurasian Eagle-Owl (*Bubo bubo*), included to demonstrate contrast in scale and form. Each bird is depicted perched on a branch against a neutral ground, allowing close observation of plumage texture, facial structure, and stance. The hand-applied coloring enhances the naturalistic effect, particularly in the subtle gradations of brown, grey, cream, and rust tones characteristic of owl plumage. The bilingual German and French headings reflect the international scholarly audience for whom such plates were produced during this period of expanding scientific exchange. Plates like this were originally issued in ornithological volumes intended for scholars, collectors, and educated amateurs. Today they are valued both for their scientific relevance and their decorative appeal. The balanced composition of six distinct species on a single sheet makes this print especially attractive to collectors of natural history, bird enthusiasts, and interior designers seeking refined, nature-inspired wall art. Condition report: Good condition. Original hand coloring. Noticeable age toning and patina throughout, with scattered foxing and light surface marks consistent with age. Minor edge wear and small discolorations visible. No modern restoration observed. Framing tips: This print is well suited to a classic museum-style presentation. A soft ivory or light beige mat will complement the aged paper and muted coloration, paired with a medium walnut, light oak, or ebonized frame depending on the desired contrast. UV-protective glazing is recommended to preserve the original hand coloring. Adoration of the Magi, c.1900 German Chromolithograph (Printed in Germany) This beautiful early 20th-century German chromolithograph depicts the Adoration of the Magi, one of the most cherished subjects in Christian art. Printed around 1900–1920 by a major German devotional press, the work displays the hallmarks of high-quality chromolithographic craftsmanship: deep, luminous color; soft tonal transitions; richly layered stone-based pigments; and a gentle atmosphere that recalls late 19th-century academic religious painting. The composition presents the Virgin Mary seated with the Christ Child, Joseph beside her, and the Three Kings kneeling in reverence as they present their gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. A young attendant appears in the doorway holding another offering. The figures are rendered with delicately modeled expressions, soft haloes, and meticulously detailed robes—particularly the embroidered white garment of the kneeling king and the golden cloak of the standing monarch. These chromatic effects were achieved through multiple lithographic stones, a technique that reached its peak among German devotional publishers during this period. The multilingual caption along the lower margin identifies the print for international Catholic distribution: “Anbetung der Könige. Adoration of the Three Kings. L’adoration des rois mages. L’adorazione dei Magi. La adoración de los Reyes Magos. Pokłon Trzech Króli.” This reflects the broad export networks of German publishers who supplied churches, monasteries, and private devotional homes throughout Europe and the Americas. The note “Printed in Germany” confirms its origin, consistent with presses in Munich, Dresden, Cologne, and Limburg, known for producing richly colored religious chromolithographs from the late 19th to early 20th century. This work is unquestionably an original chromolithograph, not a modern reproduction. The image shows true stone-layered color rather than digital or offset dots, and the paper retains the matte texture, subtle toning, and characteristic stippled pigment structure associated with genuine early 20th-century chromolithography. The presence of the multilingual caption, period typography, and the “Printed in Germany” imprint further authenticate the piece. Condition Report: Very good condition. Colors vivid and unfaded. Minor age toning to outer margins and small handling marks consistent with age. No tears, losses, or repairs observed. The bottom title and imprint text are sharp and fully legible. Tips for Framing: Ideal for framing in a gilded or walnut frame to complement the warm palette and ceremonial richness of the scene. A cream or ivory mat enhances the devotional character and highlights the luminous tones of the garments. A darker frame with a wide mat can also create a refined, museum-style presentation. Original Antique Print of Roman Naval Battles and Warships by Bertuch, c. 1800

Located in Langweer, NL

Original Antique Print of Roman Naval Battles and Warships by Bertuch, c. 1800 Original antique hand-colored copper engraving illustrating ancient Roman naval spectacles and warships, published in Friedrich Justin Bertuch’s celebrated “Bilderbuch für Kinder” around 1800. The plate is titled “Alterthümer XIII / Antiquités XIII” and illustrates the extraordinary Roman practice of staging mock naval battles, known as naumachiae. Fig. 1 depicts a large purpose-built naumachia: an oval amphitheater surrounding a flooded arena in which several vessels engage in a simulated naval battle. Additional ships are shown approaching through the monumental entrance and waterway below. Such elaborate spectacles were among the most ambitious forms of public entertainment in ancient Rome. Figs. 2 and 3 show detailed side views of ancient oared warships, illustrating their construction, banks of oars, raised sterns and military equipment. The combination of classical architecture, naval history and finely drawn ancient vessels makes this an especially interesting plate from Bertuch’s series. The engraving is signed “J. H. Schmuzer” at lower right. Friedrich Justin Bertuch (1747–1822) was a German publisher, writer and patron of the arts. His monumental “Bilderbuch für Kinder” (Picture Book for Children) was one of the great illustrated educational encyclopedias of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Published in Weimar from 1790 onward, it contained hundreds of engraved and hand-colored plates covering natural history, geography, science, technology, mythology, antiquity and costumes. An unusual and decorative early print combining ancient Roman history, architecture and maritime subjects. Creator: Friedrich Justin Bertuch (1747–1822) Engraver: J. H. Schmuzer Source: Bilderbuch für Kinder Plate: Alterthümer XIII / Antiquités XIII Place of Publication: Weimar, Germany Date of Manufacture: Circa 1800 Period: Early 19th Century Style: Neoclassical – In the Period of Medium: Original hand-colored copper engraving on paper Condition: Good. Wear consistent with age and use. Light age-related toning and occasional minor spotting. Minor marginal wear. Original hand coloring remains attractive. Please refer to the photographs for further details of condition. Please note: This is an original antique print from circa 1800, not a modern reproduction. The print is sold unframed. German Renaissance & Landsknecht Costumes 1500s – Set of 6 Antique Prints, 1880

Located in Langweer, NL

Germany 1500–1600, Set of Six Antique Hand-Colored Renaissance Costume Prints This exceptional set of six hand-colored costume plates presents a richly detailed visual history of German dress between 1500 and 1600, a century marked by artistic transformation, political upheaval, and the dramatic rise of the Landsknechts—Europe’s most flamboyant mercenary soldiers. Produced by Ernst Wasmuth A.-G. in Berlin after designs by Max Tilke, the series forms a cohesive and chronologically focused group illustrating both military and civilian fashion at the height of the German Renaissance. Plate 121 (1500–1525) introduces early Renaissance styles through richly dressed townspeople, artisans, and vividly attired Landsknechts in striped hose, puffed sleeves, and slashed fabrics. Their bold silhouettes and vibrant colors reflect an era that embraced display, individuality, and martial confidence. Plate 125 shifts attention to educated and urban society. Nobles, scholars, patricians, and elegantly dressed women appear in fitted gowns, fur-lined robes, tall hats, and structured outer garments typical of pre-Reformation Germany. This plate captures the rising influence of civic authority and intellectual life in cities such as Nuremberg and Augsburg. Plate 128 brings us deeper into mid-16th-century fashion, featuring court musicians, entertainers, and courtiers in short doublets, decorative hose, lightweight cloaks, and feathered caps. A second grouping includes finely dressed nobles and diplomats, highlighting the refinement and ceremony of German court culture. Plates 133, 134, and 135 together form an extraordinary triptych of Landsknecht fashion. These soldiers became famous across Europe for their exuberant and unconventional dress—massive slashed sleeves, multicolored fabrics, puffed shoulders, dagger-cut openings, exaggerated hose, and feathered hats. Represented here in various ranks and roles, the Landsknechts illustrate not only military history but also one of the boldest and most influential costume styles of the Renaissance. Their outfits remain some of the most recognizable in European fashion history. As a complete six-plate group, these prints present a compelling narrative of German Renaissance society—its militarism, its artistic ambition, and its richly diverse clothing traditions. The hand-coloring across the set is bright and consistent, showcasing atmospheric tones, strong contrasts, and careful attention to detail. Few collections display this level of completeness and visual harmony. Ideal for collectors of European history, early modern military culture, historical costume, or decorative antique prints with strong visual presence, this series also suits interior designers seeking classical themes, warm palettes, and refined historical character. Condition report: All six plates are in very good antique condition with gentle age toning and minimal edge wear. Image areas are clean and colors remain vivid. Plate numbers and captions clearly present. No tears, staining, or repairs. Framing suggestion: For a striking installation, frame the six plates in matching dark-stained or walnut frames with warm cream mats. They display beautifully in two rows of three, or as a vertical series of paired prints. Their strong color palette and rhythmic compositions create a dynamic yet elegant wall display. Technique: Hand-colored lithographs Maker: Max Tilke, printed by Ernst Wasmuth A.-G., Berlin, c.1880 Keywords: German Renaissance costumes, 1500s German clothing, Landsknecht soldiers, antique costume print, hand-colored lithograph, Max Tilke, Ernst Wasmuth Berlin, Renaissance fashion Germany, 16th century attire, historical dress Germany, court fashion 1500s, German nobles costumes, artisan clothing Renaissance...

Satirical German Military Engraving of Napoleon as the Little Corporal, c1835
Satirical German Military Engraving of Napoleon as the Little Corporal, c1835

Satirical German Military Engraving of Napoleon as the Little Corporal, c1835

Located in Langweer, NL

Satirical German Military Engraving of Napoleon as the Little Corporal, c1835 This 19th-century German engraving presents a humorous encounter between a marching soldier and Napoleon Bonaparte, referred to here by his well-known nickname “the Little Corporal.” The guard refuses to let Napoleon pass, replying firmly: “Man passirt nicht — Und wär’ Ihr der kleine Corporal selbst; ich sage Euch man passirt nicht” (“One does not pass — and even if you were the Little Corporal himself, I tell you one does not pass”). The composition gently satirizes Napoleon’s legendary status, contrasting the anonymous authority of a common soldier with the figure who once ruled Europe. Produced around 1830–1850, likely in a German or Austrian print workshop, the engraving reflects the wave of post-Napoleonic satire that circulated widely in Central Europe. The artist captures the exchange with strong facial expressions, detailed uniforms and a richly rendered woodland setting. Prints of this type remain popular among collectors of Napoleonic history, military art and European caricature, while the crisp impression and large sheet size make it appealing as decorative wall art as well. A charming and historically engaging image from the early 19th century, combining humour, military history and well-executed engraving work. Condition: Strong impression; light age toning; minor handling marks; margins clean with no major tears or repairs. Suitable for immediate framing. Framing: Looks best floated on off-white or pale cream museum board in a thin black, dark walnut or antiqued gold frame. Museum glass recommended to preserve contrast and period detail. Keywords: Napoleon engraving...
