Original Antique Print of Roman Naval Battles and Warships by Bertuch, c. 1800
Located in Langweer, NL
Original Antique Print of Roman Naval Battles and Warships by Bertuch, c. 1800 Original antique hand-colored copper engraving illustrating ancient Roman naval spectacles and warships, published in Friedrich Justin Bertuch’s celebrated “Bilderbuch für Kinder” around 1800. The plate is titled “Alterthümer XIII / Antiquités XIII” and illustrates the extraordinary Roman practice of staging mock naval battles, known as naumachiae. Fig. 1 depicts a large purpose-built naumachia: an oval amphitheater surrounding a flooded arena in which several vessels engage in a simulated naval battle. Additional ships are shown approaching through the monumental entrance and waterway below. Such elaborate spectacles were among the most ambitious forms of public entertainment in ancient Rome. Figs. 2 and 3 show detailed side views of ancient oared warships, illustrating their construction, banks of oars, raised sterns and military equipment. The combination of classical architecture, naval history and finely drawn ancient vessels makes this an especially interesting plate from Bertuch’s series. The engraving is signed “J. H. Schmuzer” at lower right. Friedrich Justin Bertuch (1747–1822) was a German publisher, writer and patron of the arts. His monumental “Bilderbuch für Kinder” (Picture Book for Children) was one of the great illustrated educational encyclopedias of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Published in Weimar from 1790 onward, it contained hundreds of engraved and hand-colored plates covering natural history, geography, science, technology, mythology, antiquity and costumes. An unusual and decorative early print combining ancient Roman history, architecture and maritime subjects. Creator: Friedrich Justin Bertuch (1747–1822) Engraver: J. H. Schmuzer Source: Bilderbuch für Kinder Plate: Alterthümer XIII / Antiquités XIII Place of Publication: Weimar, Germany Date of Manufacture: Circa 1800 Period: Early 19th Century Style: Neoclassical – In the Period of Medium: Original hand-colored copper engraving on paper Condition: Good. Wear consistent with age and use. Light age-related toning and occasional minor spotting. Minor marginal wear. Original hand coloring remains attractive. Please refer to the photographs for further details of condition. Please note: This is an original antique print from circa 1800, not a modern reproduction. The print is sold unframed. Holy Family and Three Kings, c.1900 German Religious Chromolithograph
Located in Langweer, NL
Adoration of the Magi, c.1900 German Chromolithograph (Printed in Germany) This beautiful early 20th-century German chromolithograph depicts the Adoration of the Magi, one of the most cherished subjects in Christian art. Printed around 1900–1920 by a major German devotional press, the work displays the hallmarks of high-quality chromolithographic craftsmanship: deep, luminous color; soft tonal transitions; richly layered stone-based pigments; and a gentle atmosphere that recalls late 19th-century academic religious painting. The composition presents the Virgin Mary seated with the Christ Child, Joseph beside her, and the Three Kings kneeling in reverence as they present their gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. A young attendant appears in the doorway holding another offering. The figures are rendered with delicately modeled expressions, soft haloes, and meticulously detailed robes—particularly the embroidered white garment of the kneeling king and the golden cloak of the standing monarch. These chromatic effects were achieved through multiple lithographic stones, a technique that reached its peak among German devotional publishers during this period. The multilingual caption along the lower margin identifies the print for international Catholic distribution: “Anbetung der Könige. Adoration of the Three Kings. L’adoration des rois mages. L’adorazione dei Magi. La adoración de los Reyes Magos. Pokłon Trzech Króli.” This reflects the broad export networks of German publishers who supplied churches, monasteries, and private devotional homes throughout Europe and the Americas. The note “Printed in Germany” confirms its origin, consistent with presses in Munich, Dresden, Cologne, and Limburg, known for producing richly colored religious chromolithographs from the late 19th to early 20th century. This work is unquestionably an original chromolithograph, not a modern reproduction. The image shows true stone-layered color rather than digital or offset dots, and the paper retains the matte texture, subtle toning, and characteristic stippled pigment structure associated with genuine early 20th-century chromolithography. The presence of the multilingual caption, period typography, and the “Printed in Germany” imprint further authenticate the piece. Condition Report: Very good condition. Colors vivid and unfaded. Minor age toning to outer margins and small handling marks consistent with age. No tears, losses, or repairs observed. The bottom title and imprint text are sharp and fully legible. Tips for Framing: Ideal for framing in a gilded or walnut frame to complement the warm palette and ceremonial richness of the scene. A cream or ivory mat enhances the devotional character and highlights the luminous tones of the garments. A darker frame with a wide mat can also create a refined, museum-style presentation. European Owls – Antique Hand-Colored Bird Engraving, Vogel IX, c.1800
Located in Langweer, NL
European Owls – Antique Hand-Colored Bird Engraving, Vogel IX, c.1800 This finely executed hand-colored engraving presents six European owl species arranged in comparative study, issued as Plate IX (Vogel IX / Oiseaux IX). The plate belongs to the late 18th–early 19th century tradition of scientific ornithology, in which birds were illustrated side by side to support identification, classification, and study. The owls depicted correspond to species recognized today as the Long-eared Owl (Asio otus), shown prominently with its upright posture and distinct ear tufts; the Tawny Owl (Strix aluco), represented in both its grey-brown form and its warmer rufous color morph; the Short-eared Owl (Asio flammeus), identifiable by its paler facial disc and reduced ear tufts; the small but expressive Little Owl (Athene noctua); and a larger, more powerfully built owl commonly identified as the Eurasian Eagle-Owl (*Bubo bubo*), included to demonstrate contrast in scale and form. Each bird is depicted perched on a branch against a neutral ground, allowing close observation of plumage texture, facial structure, and stance. The hand-applied coloring enhances the naturalistic effect, particularly in the subtle gradations of brown, grey, cream, and rust tones characteristic of owl plumage. The bilingual German and French headings reflect the international scholarly audience for whom such plates were produced during this period of expanding scientific exchange. Plates like this were originally issued in ornithological volumes intended for scholars, collectors, and educated amateurs. Today they are valued both for their scientific relevance and their decorative appeal. The balanced composition of six distinct species on a single sheet makes this print especially attractive to collectors of natural history, bird enthusiasts, and interior designers seeking refined, nature-inspired wall art. Condition report: Good condition. Original hand coloring. Noticeable age toning and patina throughout, with scattered foxing and light surface marks consistent with age. Minor edge wear and small discolorations visible. No modern restoration observed. Framing tips: This print is well suited to a classic museum-style presentation. A soft ivory or light beige mat will complement the aged paper and muted coloration, paired with a medium walnut, light oak, or ebonized frame depending on the desired contrast. UV-protective glazing is recommended to preserve the original hand coloring. Satirical German Military Engraving of Napoleon as the Little Corporal, c1835
Located in Langweer, NL
Satirical German Military Engraving of Napoleon as the Little Corporal, c1835 This 19th-century German engraving presents a humorous encounter between a marching soldier and Napoleon Bonaparte, referred to here by his well-known nickname “the Little Corporal.” The guard refuses to let Napoleon pass, replying firmly: “Man passirt nicht — Und wär’ Ihr der kleine Corporal selbst; ich sage Euch man passirt nicht” (“One does not pass — and even if you were the Little Corporal himself, I tell you one does not pass”). The composition gently satirizes Napoleon’s legendary status, contrasting the anonymous authority of a common soldier with the figure who once ruled Europe. Produced around 1830–1850, likely in a German or Austrian print workshop, the engraving reflects the wave of post-Napoleonic satire that circulated widely in Central Europe. The artist captures the exchange with strong facial expressions, detailed uniforms and a richly rendered woodland setting. Prints of this type remain popular among collectors of Napoleonic history, military art and European caricature, while the crisp impression and large sheet size make it appealing as decorative wall art as well. A charming and historically engaging image from the early 19th century, combining humour, military history and well-executed engraving work. Condition: Strong impression; light age toning; minor handling marks; margins clean with no major tears or repairs. Suitable for immediate framing. Framing: Looks best floated on off-white or pale cream museum board in a thin black, dark walnut or antiqued gold frame. Museum glass recommended to preserve contrast and period detail. Title: Original Antique Print of Peru, Bolivia & Chile – Lima Cathedral and Views, c.1855 Description: An original antique wood-engraved print titled "Peru, Bolivia, Chile", featuring a series of finely engraved views and ethnographic scenes from the west coast of South America. The print was published in Germany around the mid-nineteenth century. At the centre of the composition is a detailed view of the Cathedral of Lima, one of the most important landmarks of the former Viceroyalty of Peru. Surrounding this principal image are ten smaller engraved vignettes illustrating the landscapes, wildlife, architecture and people of Peru, Bolivia and Chile. The scenes include the Cathedral of Chuquisaca (Sucre, Bolivia), llamas and alpacas in the Andes, the Andean condor, Indigenous inhabitants, horsemen, traders, the marketplace of Santiago de Chile, a river scene on the Marañón, tropical Indigenous dwellings, and daily life across the region. Together they provide a fascinating nineteenth-century European overview of the geography, cultures and natural history of western South America. The print combines architecture, ethnography, zoology and landscape into a single decorative composition, making it both historically informative and visually attractive. Such composite engravings were intended to introduce readers to distant countries through carefully selected representative scenes. This is an original antique print printed...

Inca Empire Costumes, Antique Lithograph of Inca Clothing, Max Tilke c.1880
Located in Langweer, NL
Aztec & Early Mexican Costumes, Set of 2 Antique Prints, 1500–1525 This striking pair of early 20th-century costume plates offers a vivid and historically valuable depiction of Aztec and early Mexican dress during the 16th century. Illustrated by Max Tilke and published by Ernst Wasmuth A.G. in Berlin, these prints belong to one of the most respected costume‐historical series of the period. Tilke was known for his meticulous research and his ability to translate ethnographic sources into richly detailed, accurate visual reconstructions. These two plates are among the most vibrant and desirable in the entire publication. Plate 144 presents warriors and nobles in full ceremonial and military attire. Jaguar warriors, eagle warriors, officers, and elite fighters are shown with their distinctive feathered headdresses, painted shields, quilted cotton armor (ichcahuipilli), and symbolic iconography referencing Aztec cosmology and rank. The colors and patterns reflect authentic codex sources, making the plate particularly valuable to historians of pre-Columbian culture. Plate 145 focuses on social classes and civilian dress from the late pre-Hispanic and early colonial period. Market vendors, weavers, young nobles, priests, and high-ranking women appear wearing garments such as tilmas, breechcloths, embroidered huipiles, feathered adornments, and body paint. Together, the two plates offer a rare, well-documented overview of everyday and ceremonial dress from Mexico around 1500–1525. The printing quality is exceptionally fine, with rich color lithography capturing the tonal variations of feathers, textiles, and painted patterns. These plates make a powerful impression when framed and are well suited for collectors of ethnographic art, museum-oriented interiors, historians of Mesoamerica, and designers seeking authentic cultural references. It is now uncommon to find both Mexican plates...
