Antique Botanical Prints Set, German Wildflower Atlas Plates, Stuttgart 1885

Located in Langweer, NL

Antique Botanical Prints Set, German Wildflower Atlas Plates, Stuttgart 1885 This elegant group of botanical plates originates from Naturgeschichte des Pflanzenreichs by M. Fünfstück, published in Stuttgart circa 1890. Produced during the late nineteenth century’s peak period of scientific illustration, these works beautifully combine botanical accuracy with refined decorative composition, making them highly suitable for both collectors and interior-driven presentation. The plates illustrate a wide variety of European wildflowers, medicinal plants, and garden species rendered in delicate hand-colored tones and precise naturalistic detail. Species represented include carnations and pinks (*Dianthus*), forget-me-nots (*Myosotis*), buttercups (*Ranunculus*), columbine (*Aquilegia*), monkshood (*Aconitum*), water lily (*Nymphaea*), poppy (*Papaver*), cabbage (*Brassica*), meadow herbs, flowering perennials, and numerous field and woodland plants. The compositions balance individual botanical studies with airy spacing and harmonious arrangement, allowing each specimen to read clearly while forming a cohesive visual ensemble. The restrained palette — soft sage greens, pale blues, muted yellows, and gentle rose tones — creates a calm and sophisticated aesthetic well suited to contemporary interiors. Rather than functioning merely as scientific diagrams, these plates operate as architectural decorative elements, ideal for organic modern interiors, Scandinavian spaces, country houses, wellness environments, or boutique hospitality settings. Displayed together, the prints introduce rhythm, natural structure, and historical authenticity while maintaining visual lightness. Originally produced as educational material yet executed with notable artistic sensitivity, the plates exemplify the German tradition of merging science, craftsmanship, and design. Their timeless botanical subjects and balanced compositions make them especially appealing for designers seeking authentic nineteenth-century works that integrate seamlessly into modern environments. The prints are offered unframed, allowing collectors and designers full freedom to tailor framing choices to individual interiors. Any framed examples shown serve purely as visual inspiration. Condition report: Very good antique condition with general age-related toning consistent with late nineteenth-century paper. Light surface wear and occasional minor spotting visible upon close inspection. Original centerfolds as issued. Paper remains structurally sound and displays attractively overall. Framing tips: These botanical plates benefit from generous ivory or warm off-white matting to enhance the delicate compositions and preserve visual breathing space around each specimen. Frames in dark walnut, natural oak, or subtle antique gilt create an elegant balance between historical character and contemporary refinement. Hanging as a grid or salon-style botanical arrangement produces a cohesive, designer-led wall installation with strong visual presence. Aztec & Early Mexican Costumes, Set of 2 Antique Prints, 1500–1525 This striking pair of early 20th-century costume plates offers a vivid and historically valuable depiction of Aztec and early Mexican dress during the 16th century. Illustrated by Max Tilke and published by Ernst Wasmuth A.G. in Berlin, these prints belong to one of the most respected costume‐historical series of the period. Tilke was known for his meticulous research and his ability to translate ethnographic sources into richly detailed, accurate visual reconstructions. These two plates are among the most vibrant and desirable in the entire publication. Plate 144 presents warriors and nobles in full ceremonial and military attire. Jaguar warriors, eagle warriors, officers, and elite fighters are shown with their distinctive feathered headdresses, painted shields, quilted cotton armor (ichcahuipilli), and symbolic iconography referencing Aztec cosmology and rank. The colors and patterns reflect authentic codex sources, making the plate particularly valuable to historians of pre-Columbian culture. Plate 145 focuses on social classes and civilian dress from the late pre-Hispanic and early colonial period. Market vendors, weavers, young nobles, priests, and high-ranking women appear wearing garments such as tilmas, breechcloths, embroidered huipiles, feathered adornments, and body paint. Together, the two plates offer a rare, well-documented overview of everyday and ceremonial dress from Mexico around 1500–1525. The printing quality is exceptionally fine, with rich color lithography capturing the tonal variations of feathers, textiles, and painted patterns. These plates make a powerful impression when framed and are well suited for collectors of ethnographic art, museum-oriented interiors, historians of Mesoamerica, and designers seeking authentic cultural references. It is now uncommon to find both Mexican plates...

Located in Langweer, NL

Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene – Antique German Chromolithograph, c. 1895 This striking late 19th-century German chromolithograph depicts the moving biblical moment in which the risen Christ appears to Mary Magdalene following the Resurrection. Christ is shown standing in quiet majesty, halo radiant with divine light, His right hand placed gently over His heart in a gesture of compassion and reassurance. Mary Magdalene kneels before Him with deep devotion, her long flowing hair and rich garments emphasizing both humility and reverence. The composition is set within a tranquil garden landscape, traditionally associated with the Resurrection narrative, reinforcing the spiritual symbolism of rebirth, forgiveness, and divine mercy. Christ’s red tunic and deep blue mantle radiate warmth and solemnity, while the soft golden halo creates a luminous focal point that draws the eye immediately to His face. This scene, known in Christian tradition as *Noli Me Tangere* (“Touch Me Not”), represents one of the most emotionally powerful moments of the Gospel story. It became a highly favored subject in Catholic devotional art of the late 19th century, commonly displayed in prayer corners, chapels, religious schools, and family interiors. Produced using high-quality chromolithography, this print achieves exceptional painterly depth, with delicate shading in the flesh tones, refined folds in the drapery, and beautifully layered landscape colors. The gold highlights of the halos and the saturated reds and blues are especially well preserved, reflecting the superior production standards of German devotional publishers during this period. This is a visually commanding and spiritually meaningful artwork, highly desirable for Catholic collectors, sacred art interiors, and serious devotional art collections. CONDITION REPORT Good antique condition overall. Light, even age toning to the paper consistent with late 19th-century chromolithographs. Minor edge wear and very gentle corner softening visible upon close inspection. No major stains, no tears, and no restoration observed. Colors remain strong and vivid. FRAMING TIPS This print will display beautifully in a classic gilt or softly antiqued gold wooden frame to echo the sacred halo tones. For a more restrained interior, a dark walnut or black lacquer frame with a wide ivory mat and museum glass will create a dramatic devotional presentation. TECHNIQUE Chromolithography MAKER German devotional publisher, Germany, circa 1895 KEYWORD BLOCK Jesus and Mary Magdalene, Noli Me Tangere, resurrection scene, antique catholic print...

Original Antique Print of Four Corals by Bertuch, c. 1790 Original antique hand-colored copper engraving depicting four remarkable varieties of coral and marine growth, published in Friedrich Justin Bertuch’s celebrated “Bilderbuch für Kinder” around the end of the 18th century. The plate is titled “Corallen I / Corallia / Coraux I” and bears the reference “I.B.21” at lower right. It belongs to Bertuch’s early natural-history series illustrating the extraordinary diversity of marine organisms then collectively described as corals. Four dramatically different specimens are arranged across the sheet. Fig. 1 depicts a branching red coral with multiple upright stems. Its vivid original red coloring makes it the strongest color accent in the composition and recalls the precious red corals that had long been collected in the Mediterranean and used for jewelry and decorative objects. Fig. 2 shows a tall, dark branching form with an elegant tree-like structure, representative of the flexible horn-like corals historically grouped among the gorgonians. Fig. 3 illustrates a large irregular, porous coral formation, rendered in pale ochre and gray tones. Its complex surface and numerous cavities emphasize the extraordinary structural variety encountered in coral colonies. Fig. 4 dominates the upper part of the plate and is perhaps the most visually striking specimen. Its broad, deeply folded and radiating surfaces create an almost flower-like or sculptural appearance, demonstrating why corals occupied such a fascinating position between the botanical and zoological worlds in early natural-history classification. During the 18th century, the classification and biological nature of corals remained an important subject of scientific investigation. Earlier naturalists had frequently compared them with plants or mineral formations, while increasingly detailed observation established their animal nature. The terminology and organization of early coral collections therefore provide a fascinating insight into the development of marine zoology. The engraving combines finely engraved scientific detail with restrained original hand coloring in red, ochre, gray and black. Its large sculptural forms and spacious composition give the plate considerable decorative appeal in both traditional natural-history collections and contemporary coastal interiors. Friedrich Justin Bertuch (1747–1822) was a German publisher, writer and patron of the arts. His monumental “Bilderbuch für Kinder” was one of the great illustrated educational encyclopedias of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, covering zoology, botany, geography, science, technology, antiquity and numerous other subjects.
