Original Antique Print of Exotic Moths and Butterflies by Bertuch, c.1820 Original antique hand-colored engraving depicting four spectacular moths and butterflies, published in Friedrich Justin Bertuch’s celebrated “Bilderbuch für Kinder” during the early 19th century. The plate is titled “Insecten LXXXI / Insecta LXXXI / Insectes LXXXI” and bears the reference “XV.B.45” at lower right. Dominating the composition is Fig. 1, an extraordinary large pale yellow-green silk moth with exceptionally long, elegant tails extending from the hindwings. Delicate linear markings, circular eyespots and subtle red accents give the insect an almost ethereal appearance. Fig. 2 depicts another impressive large moth with broad brown forewings and richly patterned hindwings in black, pink and cream. Its strongly striped abdomen and unusual green markings add to the exotic character of the specimen. Figs. 3 and 4 illustrate two smaller but vividly colored butterflies. Fig. 3 combines brilliant red-orange wings with dramatic black markings, while Fig. 4 is predominantly black with a striking border of blue, orange and cream eyespots. The considerable difference in scale between the enormous long-tailed moth and the smaller butterflies creates a particularly effective composition. The restrained pale coloring of the upper specimen contrasts beautifully with the intense red, blue, black and pink of the insects below. The engraving is enhanced with original hand coloring and is a fine example of the fascination with exotic Lepidoptera in European natural-history publications of the early 19th century. Friedrich Justin Bertuch (1747–1822) was a German publisher, writer and patron of the arts. His monumental “Bilderbuch für Kinder” (Picture Book for Children) was one of the most ambitious illustrated educational encyclopedias of its period. Published in Weimar from 1790 onward, it contained hundreds of engraved and hand-colored plates devoted to zoology, botany, geography, science, technology, antiquity and numerous other subjects. A fine and large 19th century oil on canvas after Bartolomé Esteban Murrillo's (Spanish, 1617-1682) Masterpiece "Beggar Boys Playing Dice" (The original work by Murillo was painted in 1675). The impressive artwork depicts two young boys playing dice while another eats a piece of fruit as his dog watches on., within an ornate gildwood and gesso frame bearing a label from the faming company Bigelow & Jordan. The original work by Murillo is currently at the Alte Pinakothek Museum in Munich, Germany. The present work is signed: L. Rüber. Circa: Munich, Late 19th Century. Bartolomé Esteban Murillo (born late December 1617, baptized January 1, 1618 – April 3, 1682) was a Spanish Baroque painter. Although he is best known for his religious works, Murillo also produced a considerable number of paintings of contemporary women and children. These lively, realist portraits of flower girls, street urchins, and beggars constitute an extensive and appealing record of the everyday life of his times. Murillo was born to Gaspar Esteban and María Pérez Murillo. He may have been born in Seville or in Pilas, a smaller Andalusian town. It is clear that he was baptized in Seville in 1618, the youngest son in a family of fourteen. His father was a barber and surgeon. His parents died when Murillo was still very young, and the artist was largely brought up by his aunt and uncle. Murillo began his art studies under Juan del Castillo in Seville. There he became familiar with Flemish painting and the "Treatise on Sacred Images" of Molanus (Ian van der Meulen or Molano). The great commercial importance of Seville at the time ensured that he was subject to influences from other regions. His first works were influenced by Zurbarán, Jusepe de Ribera and Alonzo Cano, and he shared their strongly realist approach. As his painting developed, his more important works evolved towards the polished style that suited the bourgeois and aristocratic tastes of the time, demonstrated especially in his Roman Catholic religious works. In 1642, at the age of 26, he moved to Madrid, where he most likely became familiar with the work of Velázquez, and would have seen the work of Venetian and Flemish masters in the royal collections; the rich colors and softly modeled forms of his subsequent work suggest these influences. In 1645 he returned to Seville and married Beatriz Cabrera y Villalobos, with whom he eventually had eleven children. In that year, he painted eleven canvases for the convent of St. Francisco el Grande in Seville. Set of Three Antique Butterfly and Moth Prints by Bertuch, c. 1800 Set of three original antique hand-colored copper engravings depicting spectacular butterflies and moths together with their caterpillar and chrysalis stages, published in Friedrich Justin Bertuch’s celebrated “Bilderbuch für Kinder” around the beginning of the 19th century. The three plates are titled “Insecten XXIX / Insectes XXIX,” “Insecten XXIII / Insectes XXIII,” and “Insecten XXXI / Insectes XXXI.” Together they form a particularly decorative group illustrating the remarkable variety and metamorphosis of butterflies and moths. The first plate, Insecten XXIX, presents four large butterflies. Particularly striking is the brilliant blue specimen occupying the lower half of the composition, contrasted with three butterflies in more restrained shades of brown, cream and violet. The different views of the wings demonstrate the extraordinary variation in pattern and coloration among exotic butterflies. The second plate, Insecten XXIII, is devoted to two spectacular moths and their life cycles. The upper specimen is a Death’s-head Hawk-moth type, immediately recognizable by the remarkable skull-like marking on its thorax. It is accompanied by its large striped caterpillar and chrysalis. Below is another beautifully patterned moth shown together with its caterpillar and pupal stage. The third plate, Insecten XXXI, is dominated by a magnificent large eye-spotted moth. Its broad wings carry four prominent eye-like markings surrounded by intricate bands of black, cream, red and ochre. Beneath it are the extraordinary green caterpillar and dark chrysalis, illustrating three stages of the insect’s metamorphosis. The three engravings are beautifully enhanced with original hand coloring. Together they create an exceptionally attractive natural-history ensemble, combining strong decorative appeal with the scientific fascination with insect metamorphosis that characterized European natural history around 1800. The plates bear engraved signatures of Jacob Hauer Schmuzer, one of the engravers associated with Bertuch’s monumental publication.
