Albrecht Dürer - Saint Eustace
About the Item
Albrecht Dürer, Saint Eustace.
Wood engraving, 1501.
Signed with the monogram A.D (Albrecht Dürer)
Why not having on a wall a Masterpiece which is also a part of History?
Marie-Antoinette has selected this 1501 engraving, the largest of Dürer, which has been owned by two distinguished collectors. The Baron Edmond de Rothschild had indeed acquired it in 1935 from Emperor Maximilian 1st of Austria.
Another sample of this engraving was on display until January 2024 at the “Treasures in black and white” exhibition at the Petit Palais, Paris.
This work is part of a series of studies made by Dürer on the body of the horse. This plate engraved in 1501 illustrates the legend of the Roman general Placidus, who became Saint Eustace after his conversion, when the Christ appeared to him on a cross between the antlers of the deer he was hunting. The composition is based on a painting by Pisanello, currently in the National Gallery in London.
Dürer is the great master of the German Renaissance. He inspired Raphael and Titian. Dürer and Raphael admired each other and exchanged their works.
Dürer worked with his friend Leonardo Da Vinci on the divine proportion (the golden ratio). Dürer preferred engraving to painting for its finesse and nuances.

Production of the Arch of Honor was essentially completed by 1515 but was delayed in release while Maximilian ordered his court historians to add further research into his purported early ancestry. Only a small number of proofs were completed before the emperor’s death, so most of the early printings of complete sets of the Arch were only made and distributed by his grandson Ferdinand I in 1526. Another edition appeared from the Habsburgs in 1559. Woodcut by Albrecht Durer...Category
