Vibrant Varieties: Showcasing Red and Yellow Maize in Botanical Art, c. 1875
Located in Langweer, NL
The original antique botanical illustration depicts two varieties of Zea mays, commonly known as corn or maize. This artwork showcases the diversity within this staple crop, featuring both a deep red and a classic golden yellow variety. The maker of this print, Louis Van Houtte, was instrumental in producing "Flore des Serres et des Jardins de l'Europe." Van Houtte was renowned for his detailed and vibrant botanical prints, which were produced through the method of chromolithography—a pioneering print technique of that era which allowed for the rich and precise reproduction of colors. About Louis Van Houtte: - Career and Contributions: Louis Van Houtte was a Belgian horticulturist, botanist, and publisher who operated one of the largest nurseries of the time. His nursery specialized in exotic plants, and he was known for his expertise in botany and keen business acumen. - Flore des Serres et des Jardins de l'Europe: This was one of the most prominent works in botanical literature in the 19th century, illustrating thousands of plants. Van Houtte employed several talented artists to create detailed illustrations of plants cultivated in his nursery, as well as other notable specimens from around the world. - Legacy and Influence: Van Houtte's work had a significant impact on the dissemination of botanical knowledge and the popularization of horticulture in Europe and beyond. His meticulous attention to the accuracy and aesthetics of plant illustrations set...

The Scales of Justice: An English Criminal Judge in Traditional Robes, 1847
Located in Langweer, NL
The image is labeled "Juge criminel anglais," which translates to "English Criminal Judge." The figure depicted is wearing a long, flowing robe with a blue undergarment and a red cape, which is indicative of the traditional robes worn by English judges, especially in higher courts. The judge also wears a white coif, which was a typical head covering for English judges and serjeants-at-law. He carries a staff, which may symbolize authority or the office of the judiciary. His belt is richly decorated, suggesting the importance and high status of his position within the legal system. The robes and coif show significant detail, such as the fur lining on the cape and the gold fastening on the belt, which alludes to the formality and solemnity of the judicial office. The judge's expression is stern and somber, reflecting the serious nature of his role in adjudicating criminal matters. Egg whites can be applied as a varnish over pigments to enhance their brightness and to protect the colors. This application could make the colors appear more vivid and also add a slight glossy sheen to the surface of the image. Egg yolk, on the other hand, was commonly used as a binding agent in paint. It forms the basis of tempera paint, a medium that was widely used before the advent of oil painting. Egg yolk helps to create a durable and long-lasting color that adheres well to various surfaces. In the context of the print from 1847, it's less likely that egg whites or yolks were used directly on the print, as by that time, commercial printing processes would have been more advanced and less reliant on such manual methods. However, if this print is a representation of an earlier style or is meant to mimic the appearance of hand-painted manuscripts...

Kaoru Kawano Signed Large Japanese Woodblock Print Dancing Geisha Figure Eshima
Located in Studio City, CA
A beautiful work by famed Japanese artist Kaoru Kawano who was known for his whimsical portrayals of women, children, and animals. Stylistically, he was one of the first Japanese artists to combine Western-style elements with the traditional methods of woodblock printmaking. This work is known as "Dancing Figure (Eshima)" The print is signed (in white ink within the image) and sealed (in red) by Kawano. This work is a quite rare self-printed lifetime double dai Oban large-size print. The quality and colors are striking. It is likely from a limited edition and perhaps numbered on the lower margin (we can not verify as it was previously framed but we are confident that this is the case). A very beautiful and rich image. Would make for a great addition to any Japanese art and print collection or Stand-out accent work in about any setting. Antique and Vintage Prints for Wall Decor

Prints are works of art produced in multiple editions. Though several copies of a specific artwork can exist, collectors consider antique and vintage prints originals when they have been manually created by the artist or are “impressions” that are part of the artist’s intent for the work.

Modern artists use a range of printmaking techniques to produce different types of prints such as relief, intaglio and planographic. Relief prints are created by cutting away a printing surface to leave only a design. Ink or paint is applied to the raised parts of the surface, and it is used to stamp or press the design onto paper or another surface. Relief prints include woodcuts, linocuts and engravings.

Intaglio prints are the opposite of relief prints in that they are incised into the printing surface. The artist cuts the design into a block, plate or other material and then coats it with ink before wiping off the surface and transferring the design to paper through tremendous pressure. Intaglio prints have plate marks showing the impression of the original block or plate as it was pressed onto the paper.

Artists create planographic prints by drawing a design on a stone or metal plate using a grease crayon. The plate is washed with water, then ink is spread over the plate and it adheres to the grease markings. The image is then stamped on paper to make prints.

All of these printmaking methods have an intricate process, although each can usually transfer only one color of ink. Artists use separate plates or blocks for multiple colors, and together these create one finished work of art.

Find prints ranging from the 18th- and 19th-century bird illustrations by J.C. Sepp to mid-century modern prints, as well as numerous other antique and vintage prints at 1stDibs. Browse the collection today and read about how to arrange wall art in your space.
