Satirical German Military Engraving of Napoleon as the Little Corporal, c1835

Located in Langweer, NL

Satirical German Military Engraving of Napoleon as the Little Corporal, c1835 This 19th-century German engraving presents a humorous encounter between a marching soldier and Napoleon Bonaparte, referred to here by his well-known nickname “the Little Corporal.” The guard refuses to let Napoleon pass, replying firmly: “Man passirt nicht — Und wär’ Ihr der kleine Corporal selbst; ich sage Euch man passirt nicht” (“One does not pass — and even if you were the Little Corporal himself, I tell you one does not pass”). The composition gently satirizes Napoleon’s legendary status, contrasting the anonymous authority of a common soldier with the figure who once ruled Europe. Produced around 1830–1850, likely in a German or Austrian print workshop, the engraving reflects the wave of post-Napoleonic satire that circulated widely in Central Europe. The artist captures the exchange with strong facial expressions, detailed uniforms and a richly rendered woodland setting. Prints of this type remain popular among collectors of Napoleonic history, military art and European caricature, while the crisp impression and large sheet size make it appealing as decorative wall art as well. A charming and historically engaging image from the early 19th century, combining humour, military history and well-executed engraving work. Condition: Strong impression; light age toning; minor handling marks; margins clean with no major tears or repairs. Suitable for immediate framing. Framing: Looks best floated on off-white or pale cream museum board in a thin black, dark walnut or antiqued gold frame. Museum glass recommended to preserve contrast and period detail. Keywords: Napoleon engraving...

Chinese Musical Instruments – Set of Three Ferrario Hand-Colored Engravings, 1815 A rare early nineteenth-century hand-coloured copperplate engraving from Giulio Ferrario’s celebrated ethnographic publication Il Costume Antico e Moderno di Tutti i Popoli (Ancient and Modern Costumes of All Peoples), published in Milan circa 1815. This finely detailed plate presents a visual survey of traditional Chinese musical instruments, combining artistic refinement with documentary intent and reflecting Europe’s growing fascination with Chinese culture during the period of Chinoiserie and early global ethnography. The engraving illustrates a diverse array of classical instruments associated with court, ceremonial, theatrical, and scholarly traditions of Qing dynasty China. Among the identifiable instruments are the pipa (琵琶), the iconic pear-shaped lute central to classical repertoire; the ruan (阮) and yueqin (月琴), round-bodied lutes used...

Napoleonic Imperial Guard Grenadiers, Officer and Soldier – French Prints, 1843

Located in Langweer, NL

Napoleonic Imperial Guard Grenadiers, Officer and Soldier – French Prints Description: This fine pair of hand-colored 19th-century prints depicts members of Napoleon Bonaparte’s elite Imperial Guard Grenadiers, one of the most prestigious and recognizable units of the Napoleonic army. On the left, an officer and a soldier of the Guard are shown standing and conversing, their uniforms rendered with careful attention to rank, posture, and insignia. On the right, a fusilier grenadier of the Imperial Guard is depicted in full dress (grande tenue), standing alone in a composed, almost ceremonial stance. The Grenadiers of the Imperial Guard were the embodiment of Napoleonic military prestige. Selected for their experience, discipline, and physical stature, they served both as an elite fighting force and as a visual symbol of imperial authority. These prints emphasize uniform details such as the bearskin-style headgear with plumes, cross-belts, muskets, gaiters, and the distinctive color palette of the Guard, making them valuable visual documents for historians, collectors, and military uniform specialists. The prints originate from *Histoire de l’Empereur Napoléon* by P.-M. Laurent de l’Ardèche, published in Paris in 1843, with illustrations after designs by Horace Vernet. Vernet was the foremost visual chronicler of Napoleonic France, and his imagery played a key role in shaping the 19th-century perception of Napoleon’s army, balancing historical accuracy with heroic idealization. These works were intended not only as book illustrations but also as standalone images suitable for framing, which explains their refined execution and enduring decorative appeal. Offered together, this pair forms a coherent and highly attractive set, ideal for collectors of Napoleonic history, French military art...

Indian Mughal Inspired Brass Wall Hanging, 20th Century

Located in Islamabad, PK

Visualize a captivating brass wall hanging from the 20th century, a masterpiece that intricately captures the essence of Mughal art and history. This large, hammered brass creation serves as both a work of art and a historical narrative, transporting observers to the opulent world of Mughal India. The brass wall hanging is generously sized, with a surface that gleams in the warm, golden hues characteristic of polished brass. Its weighty presence adds a sense of grandeur to any space, and the hammered texture across the entire piece adds depth and dimension to the artwork. Upon closer inspection, the surface of the brass wall hanging reveals a finely detailed Mughal scene. The artisan has skillfully hammered the brass to create a rich tapestry of imagery, showcasing the elegance and sophistication of Mughal life. The scene might include depictions of Mughal emperors and empresses, courtiers engaged in conversation, musicians playing traditional instruments, and gracefully adorned elephants parading through lush gardens. The meticulous craftsmanship extends to the fine details of clothing, jewelry, and architectural elements. The hammered technique imparts a textured quality to the figures and structures, creating a dynamic interplay of light and shadow that adds to the visual richness of the piece. The central focus of the brass wall hanging might be a magnificent Mughal palace or a serene garden, both rendered with precision and artistic flair. The scene is framed by intricate borders featuring geometric patterns and floral motifs, showcasing the artisan's dedication to both historical accuracy and aesthetic beauty. Ottomanorum Principum Effigies – Complete Ottoman Rulers Table, Rome c.1700

Located in Langweer, NL

Ottomanorum Principum Effigies – Complete Ottoman Rulers Table, Rome c.1700 This impressive and complete multi-sheet engraving set titled “Ottomanorum Principum Effigies” presents a learned dynastic overview of the Ottoman rulers, conceived as a single monumental composition rather than as independent portraits. Engraved in Rome around 1700, the series was designed for assembly into a large rectangular genealogical table, following the architectural framework and paired medallion structure visible across the sheets. The set traces the Ottoman dynasty from its founder, Osman I, through successive sultans to the reigning rulers of the early eighteenth century. Each medallion contains a finely engraved portrait accompanied by a Latin historical summary, reflecting the European scholarly tradition of universal history and comparative imperial studies. Several medallions intentionally remain blank, an original and significant feature indicating that the table was conceived as an open-ended genealogy, allowing for future rulers to be added. Their presence confirms completeness rather than loss. The engravings are executed with refined burin work, dense concentric backgrounds, and architectural framing characteristic of Roman engraving at the turn of the eighteenth century. The composition closely relates to contemporary genealogical tables of emperors, popes, and royal houses produced for an international learned audience. The sheets are printed on high-quality Italian laid paper bearing the watermark of Pietro Meliani of Fabriano, one of the most important papermakers of the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. Fabriano paper was widely favored by Roman engravers for its durability, clarity of impression, and prestige, and the presence of this watermark further supports the Roman origin and period of the set. When assembled as intended, the sheets form a visually powerful rectangular wall table, equally suited to a library, study, or institutional collection. Surviving complete sets of this series are scarce; most examples encountered on the market are fragmentary or broken up into individual sheets. Offered here is a full, intact set as issued, making it a strong object for collectors of Ottoman history, early modern genealogy, or large-scale historical prints with both intellectual and decorative authority. Condition report: Complete six-sheet set. Overall good, honest condition. Light age toning, scattered staining and watermarks, mainly in margins. Plates clean and well printed. No losses to engraved image areas. Blank medallions original to the design. Keywords: Ottoman Empire, Ottoman Sultans, Ottoman genealogy, Islamic rulers, Turkish history, Roman engraving, early modern history, dynastic table, genealogical chart, wall table, library wall art, scholarly print, Fabriano paper, Pietro Meliani watermark, Nicolas Dorigny, Rome engraving...

European Owls – Antique Hand-Colored Bird Engraving, Vogel IX, c.1800

Located in Langweer, NL

European Owls – Antique Hand-Colored Bird Engraving, Vogel IX, c.1800 This finely executed hand-colored engraving presents six European owl species arranged in comparative study, issued as Plate IX (Vogel IX / Oiseaux IX). The plate belongs to the late 18th–early 19th century tradition of scientific ornithology, in which birds were illustrated side by side to support identification, classification, and study. The owls depicted correspond to species recognized today as the Long-eared Owl (Asio otus), shown prominently with its upright posture and distinct ear tufts; the Tawny Owl (Strix aluco), represented in both its grey-brown form and its warmer rufous color morph; the Short-eared Owl (Asio flammeus), identifiable by its paler facial disc and reduced ear tufts; the small but expressive Little Owl (Athene noctua); and a larger, more powerfully built owl commonly identified as the Eurasian Eagle-Owl (*Bubo bubo*), included to demonstrate contrast in scale and form. Each bird is depicted perched on a branch against a neutral ground, allowing close observation of plumage texture, facial structure, and stance. The hand-applied coloring enhances the naturalistic effect, particularly in the subtle gradations of brown, grey, cream, and rust tones characteristic of owl plumage. The bilingual German and French headings reflect the international scholarly audience for whom such plates were produced during this period of expanding scientific exchange. Plates like this were originally issued in ornithological volumes intended for scholars, collectors, and educated amateurs. Today they are valued both for their scientific relevance and their decorative appeal. The balanced composition of six distinct species on a single sheet makes this print especially attractive to collectors of natural history, bird enthusiasts, and interior designers seeking refined, nature-inspired wall art. Condition report: Good condition. Original hand coloring. Noticeable age toning and patina throughout, with scattered foxing and light surface marks consistent with age. Minor edge wear and small discolorations visible. No modern restoration observed. Framing tips: This print is well suited to a classic museum-style presentation. A soft ivory or light beige mat will complement the aged paper and muted coloration, paired with a medium walnut, light oak, or ebonized frame depending on the desired contrast. UV-protective glazing is recommended to preserve the original hand coloring. Battle of Kauwenstein Dijk, 1585: Siege of Antwerp Engraving with Latin Legend

Located in Langweer, NL

The 'Battle for the Kauwenstein Dijk', engraved and titled Pugna in Aggerere Covenstio Anno 1585, depicts a significant battle during the Siege of Antwerp on 26 May 1585. The engraving illustrates the fierce combat around the Kauwenstein embankment, where the Spanish forces under the Duke of Parma attempted to cut off supplies to the city of Antwerp, leading to intense fighting. The scene vividly portrays soldiers engaged in close combat, naval forces in the background, and smoke rising from the battlefield as cannon fire and musket shots fill the air. The embankment, partially breached, is a focal point, showing the chaotic nature of the battle as forces from both sides converge. At the top, the title is inscribed in Latin, and a detailed legend (A-O) at the bottom provides further explanations about various parts of the battle, referencing key locations, troops, and actions. The detailed precision of the engraving reflects the high level of craftsmanship typical of 16th-century military engravings...
