Located in Langweer, NL

Garde d’Honneur, Imperial Guard Soldier, Hand-Colored Military Print 1843 This finely hand-colored military print depicts a member of the Garde d’Honneur, one of the elite auxiliary cavalry formations created during the final years of the Napoleonic Empire. Although the uniform shown relates to the campaigns of 1813–1814, this impression dates from 1843 and belongs to the important post-Napoleonic revival of interest in Imperial military history. Such later issues were produced with great care and accuracy, aimed at collectors, officers, and historians seeking authoritative visual records of Napoleonic uniforms. The Garde d’Honneur was composed largely of young men from wealthy families, equipped at their own expense, and intended to reinforce Napoleon’s depleted cavalry after the disastrous Russian campaign. The figure is shown dismounted, leading his horse across uneven terrain, a scene that emphasizes endurance and discipline rather than parade-ground display. His uniform is rendered with precision: the dark green coat with white crossbelts, red trousers, tall boots, and shako identify the corps clearly, while the detailed equipment and horse furniture...

Located in Langweer, NL

Napoleonic General of Division on Horseback, Bellangé, French Military Print 1843 This finely hand-coloured military print depicts a General of Division of the Napoleonic army, shown on horseback and accompanied by his aide-de-camp, identified in the caption as “Général de division et son aide-de-camp, 1812.” The scene captures the commanding presence and ceremonial splendour of a senior French officer during the height of Napoleon I’s imperial campaigns, with particular reference to the period of the Russian campaign and the later years of the Empire. The general is portrayed mounted on a white horse, wearing a richly decorated dark blue uniform with gold epaulettes, sash, and orders, emphasizing his high rank within the Grande Armée. The aide-de-camp follows closely behind, reinforcing the hierarchical structure and operational discipline of Napoleonic command. The careful rendering of uniforms, horse trappings, and regalia reflects the period’s obsession with military distinction and visual authority, making this image both a historical document and a work of refined military art. This print originates from the illustrated volume “Histoire de l’Empereur Napoléon” by P.-M. Laurent de l’Ardèche, published in Paris in 1843 and illustrated after designs by Hippolyte (Horace) Bellangé, one of the most important 19th-century French military art...

Napoleon I Dragoon of the Imperial Guard on Horseback, French Military Print This original 19th-century hand-coloured military print depicts a Dragoon of the Imperial Guard serving under Emperor Napoleon I, shown mounted on horseback in full ceremonial and campaign uniform. The scene represents one of the elite cavalry units of Napoleon’s Grande Armée, renowned for discipline, strength, and their prominent role in both battlefield action and imperial pageantry. The print originates from *Histoire de l’Empereur Napoléon* by P.-M. Laurent de l’Ardèche, illustrated after designs by Horace Vernet and published in Paris in 1843. Although issued decades after the events, the series is widely regarded for its historically accurate rendering of Napoleonic uniforms, equipment, and military bearing. Vernet, the foremost painter of Napoleonic subjects, drew upon first-hand military knowledge and contemporary sources to recreate the imperial army with precision and authority. The Dragoon is shown wearing the distinctive helmet with horsehair crest, green and white uniform with yellow facings, tall riding boots, and full accoutrements, including saber, musket, and rolled equipment. The powerful horse and poised posture emphasize the mobility and striking presence of the Imperial Guard cavalry, a formation personally associated with Napoleon and symbolic of his rule. The clean background and restrained landscape focus attention on uniform detail, making this an especially strong decorative and documentary example. Such prints were intended both as historical record and patriotic tribute, celebrating Napoleon I and the military structure that supported his empire. Today, they are highly sought after by collectors of Napoleonic history, French military art...

Napoleonic Light Infantry Officer 1795, French Military Uniform Print, 1843

Located in Langweer, NL

Napoleonic Light Infantry Officer 1795, French Military Uniform Print, 1843 This finely hand-colored 19th-century engraving depicts an officer of the French light infantry (infanterie légère) in 1795, during the crucial transitional years of the French Revolutionary Wars that directly shaped the rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. Shown in an animated combat stance, sword drawn and leading his men forward, the officer embodies the aggressive, mobile tactics that became a defining feature of Napoleonic warfare. Light infantry units played a vital role in Napoleon’s armies, operating as skirmishers, scouts, and advance troops. Their flexibility, speed, and independence marked a clear break from the rigid linear tactics of earlier European armies. The uniform shown here—simpler yet purposeful—reflects the pragmatic military reforms of the Revolutionary period that Napoleon later perfected and expanded across Europe. This print originates from *Histoire de l’Empereur Napoléon* by P.-M. Laurent de l’Ardèche, published in Paris in 1843. The illustrations are based on designs by Horace Vernet, the most important military artist of 19th-century France and the definitive visual chronicler of Napoleon and his era. Vernet’s work is renowned for its historical accuracy, clarity of movement, and enduring influence on the iconography of Napoleonic history. Produced during the great Napoleonic revival of the mid-19th century, this engraving combines documentary precision with romantic heroism. It is particularly well suited for collectors of Napoleonic material, French military history, and antique uniform...

Antique Hand-Colored Satyrus Statilinus Butterfly Pair by Sepp & Brants, 1905

Located in Langweer, NL

Antique Butterfly Pair Satyrus Statilinus Sepp Brants 1905 Handcolor NOTE: WE SELL THE PRINTS UNFRAMED. THE PRINTS ARE ORIGINAL AND GUARANTEED OVER 100 YEARS OLD. This refined matching pair of antique butterfly engravings originates from Parts 1–2 of the rare third and final series of 'Nederlandsche Vlinders', published in The Hague by Martinus Nijhoff between 1905 and 1913. The work was executed under the direction of A. Brants as a continuation of the legendary Sepp tradition in Dutch entomological illustration, first begun in 1728. This late series represents the final chapter of one of the most important illustrated natural history projects ever produced in the Netherlands. Both plates depict the life cycle of Satyrus Statilinus, showing the butterfly in multiple wing positions alongside detailed studies of caterpillar, chrysalis, egg, and host plant. The scientific accuracy is paired with remarkably subtle hand coloring, revealing soft browns, muted greens, and carefully shaded contours. These plates reflect the transition from the great 18th-century copper engraving tradition into early 20th-century scientific illustration while fully preserving artisanal coloring techniques. This offering includes not only the two original hand-colored copper engravings, but also the complete original printed text leaves (in Dutch language) from Part 1–2, allowing the set to be preserved as a true historical entomological unit rather than isolated decorative prints. The plates come from the library of the noted Dutch lepidopterist Jan Hendrik Ernst Wittpen (1878–1956), with his library stamp present, adding strong scientific provenance. The third series of Sepp’s butterflies is markedly rarer on the market than the earlier volumes and is highly sought after by collectors of natural history, scientific art, and museum-quality wall decor. Presented as a matching diptych, this pair works especially well for libraries, studies, and refined contemporary interiors where historical scientific imagery adds quiet authority and warmth. Condition report Both engravings and accompanying text leaves are in excellent, near-mint condition. Clean impressions, fresh original hand coloring, strong plate marks visible, no foxing, no tears, no stains. Exceptionally well preserved. Framing tips This pair is ideally suited for a horizontal diptych presentation. Use soft ivory or warm light-grey museum matting with slim walnut, bronze, or muted gilt frames. Museum glass is strongly recommended to preserve the original coloring. Hanging the two plates with 4–6 cm spacing creates a balanced and elegant wall composition. NOTE: WE SELL THE PRINTS UNFRAMED. Elegant Morvant Ram Engraving, Buffon Amsterdam Edition 1769

Located in Langweer, NL

Elegant 1769 Morvant Ram Engraving – Hand-Coloured Buffon Dutch Edition This impressive hand-coloured 18th-century engraving of the Morvant ram, titled Le Morvant, comes from the rare Dutch edition of Buffon’s monumental Histoire Naturelle, published in Amsterdam by J.H. Schneider in 1769. Appearing as Plate XXX in Tome XI, this striking portrait is one of the most distinctive and decorative sheep and goat engravings in the entire Buffon series. Drawn by Jacques de Sève, Buffon’s leading illustrator, and engraved with great refinement, the plate combines scientific accuracy with a strong visual presence, typical of the finest work in the quadruped volumes. The Morvant ram stands in full profile on a raised foreground bank, its powerful build, muscular legs, and long shaggy coat rendered with exquisite detail. De Sève’s elegant cross-hatching gives volume and texture to the thick wool and the dark mane that drapes down the animal’s chest. The curved horns, expressive eye, and firm stance emphasise both the strength and the calm dignity of the breed. The hand colouring, characteristic of the Amsterdam Schneider edition, enriches the engraving with warm brown tones, natural greens, and soft blues that bring the entire composition to life. Behind the ram, a landscape of minarets, domed buildings, and distant walls evokes the North African or Near Eastern setting associated with ancient regional breeds. The broad sky, shaded in subtle blue-grey washes, anchors the scene and provides an atmospheric backdrop that complements the earthy foreground tones. As a result, the plate balances scientific illustration and picturesque landscape in a way that remains highly desirable for collectors and decorators alike. Buffon’s Histoire Naturelle represented one of the most ambitious publishing achievements of the Enlightenment, combining zoological study with an artistic sensibility. The Morvant ram, a robust and historically important breed, was of particular interest for its adaptability, distinctive appearance, and long-standing role in agriculture and local culture. This engraving served as one of the earliest widely circulated visual records of the breed in Western Europe. More than 250 years old, this sheet remains bright, clean, and visually engaging. The strong plate mark, generous margins, and refined hand colouring make it an excellent standalone artwork or a perfect companion to related Buffon plates such as the Tunis ram, zebu, buffalo, or yak. Condition report: Very good for age. Minor toning and small foxing marks mostly confined to margins. Light handling marks typical of 18th-century paper. Strong impression with clearly visible plate mark. Hand colouring fresh and well preserved. No tears or repairs observed. Framing tips: Frame with an ivory, pale grey, or warm cream mat to complement the soft colouring of the wool and sky. A walnut or natural oak frame enhances the warm tones, while a slim black frame creates a more modern contrast. Floating the sheet is an excellent option to highlight the wide margins and plate mark. Antique Buffalo Engraving, Buffon Hand-Coloured Print Amsterdam 1769

Located in Langweer, NL

Antique Buffalo Engraving, Buffon Hand-Coloured Print Amsterdam 1769 This handsome hand-coloured 18th-century engraving of the buffalo, titled Le Buffle, comes from the rare Dutch edition of Buffon’s celebrated Histoire Naturelle, published in Amsterdam by J.H. Schneider in 1769. Appearing as Plate XXV in Tome XI, the image was drawn by Jacques de Sève, Buffon’s principal illustrator, and engraved by C.J. Fritsch. The plate is one of the most appealing large mammal portraits in the Buffon series, notable for its expressive character, fine engraving, and warm, atmospheric colouring. The buffalo stands in full profile on a grassy bank beneath a soft blue sky. Its muscular body, thick neck, and distinctive curved horns are rendered with precise cross-hatching, highlighting both strength and powerful form. The shaggy hair around the head and chest is drawn with exceptional sensitivity, giving the animal a lively, alert presence. Behind the buffalo, a distant landscape shows classical buildings, rolling hills, and soft vegetation—an elegant composition typical of de Sève, who often placed his subjects in idealised settings to evoke the exotic nature of these animals for 18th-century European audiences. Hand colouring in the Schneider edition is among the finest of all Buffon printings. The warm browns of the buffalo’s coat...
