Original Antique Print of Exotic Lizards and Flying Dragon by Bertuch, c. 1800 Original antique hand-colored copper engraving depicting three remarkable exotic lizards, published in Friedrich Justin Bertuch’s celebrated “Bilderbuch für Kinder” around the beginning of the 19th century. The plate is titled “Amphibien XII / Amphibies XII” and presents three unusual reptiles individually numbered Fig. 1–3. Particularly striking is Fig. 3, a so-called flying dragon or flying lizard, shown with its characteristic wing-like membranes extended from the sides of its body. These remarkable reptiles became popular subjects in early European natural-history publications because of their unusual ability to glide between trees. The two larger lizards above are equally dramatically represented, with elongated tails, prominent claws and distinctive markings. The animals are finely engraved and enhanced with original hand coloring in black, brown, green, red and ochre. The plate bears the engraved inscription “Jacob Hauer Schmuzer” at lower right. Friedrich Justin Bertuch (1747–1822) was a German publisher, writer and patron of the arts. His monumental “Bilderbuch für Kinder” (Picture Book for Children) was one of the great illustrated educational encyclopedias of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Published in Weimar from 1790 onward, the work contained hundreds of finely engraved and hand-colored plates covering natural history, geography, science, technology, antiquity, costumes and mythology. The plate is titled “Alterthümer VIII / Antiquités VIII” and contains four illustrations relating to Roman chariot racing and the famous circus games of antiquity. Fig. 1 presents a reconstruction of the Circus Maximus in Rome, the enormous ancient arena used for chariot races and other public spectacles. The elongated track is shown surrounded by tiers of seating, monumental entrances and the central barrier or spina, decorated with an obelisk, statues and other monuments. Fig. 2 depicts a dramatic Roman quadriga: a four-horse chariot racing at speed, with the charioteer leaning forward and wielding his whip. The richly ornamented chariot and animated horses make this the visual centerpiece of the plate. Fig. 3 illustrates details of an ancient horse harness or bridle, while Fig. 4 reproduces an ancient representation of a chariot and driver. The engraving is delicately enhanced with original hand coloring in restrained shades of green, ochre, red and brown and bears the engraved signature “Jacob H. Schmuzer” beneath Fig. 4. Antique print titled 'Principal Front of Kirby Hall'. Kirby Hall is an Elizabethan country house, located near Gretton, Northamptonshire, England. The nearest main town is Corby. One of the great Elizabethan houses of England, Kirby Hall was built for Sir Humphrey Stafford of Blatherwick, beginning in 1570. In 1575 the property was purchased by Sir Christopher Hatton of Holdenby,[1] Lord Chancellor to Queen Elizabeth I. It is a leading and early example of the Elizabethan prodigy house. Construction on the building began in 1570, based on the designs in French architectural pattern books and expanded in the Classical style over the course of the following decades. The house is now in a semi-ruined state with many parts roof-less although the Great Hall and state rooms remain intact. The gardens, with their elaborate "cutwork" design, complete with statues and urns, have been recently restored. Anne of Denmark stayed at Kirby on 9 August 1605 while King James stayed at Rockingham Castle. King James stayed for three days in August 1616. During a royal progress Esmé Stewart, 3rd Duke of Lennox died at Kirby of the "spotted ague" on 30 July 1624. It presents a remarkable selection of tropical birds distinguished by their extravagant bills, brilliant plumage and exceptionally long tail feathers. Fig. 1 depicts a bird of paradise, shown with an extraordinary cascade of fine, elongated ornamental feathers. Birds of paradise were among the most celebrated exotic birds encountered by European naturalists and collectors, admired particularly for the elaborate plumage of the males. Fig. 2 shows a spectacular long-tailed tropical bird with dark plumage, green details around the head and an exceptionally long blue-green tail extending almost the entire height of the plate. Fig. 3 depicts a large hornbill, immediately recognizable by its enormous yellow bill and prominent casque above the upper mandible. The bird is represented with predominantly black plumage contrasting against the white underside and brightly colored bill. Fig. 4 shows a toucan perched on a branch. Its oversized orange-red bill, yellow throat and dark body create one of the strongest color contrasts in the composition. A separate study of elongated feathers appears at the bottom of the plate, further emphasizing the extraordinary plumage of the exotic birds represented. The engraving is enhanced with original hand coloring in black, green, blue, yellow, orange and red. The combination of a toucan, hornbill, bird of paradise and spectacular long-tailed bird makes this one of the more decorative ornithological plates from Bertuch’s natural-history series. The first plate, Insecten XXIX, presents four large butterflies.
