Abstract geometric graphite drawing inspired by the moon
"Oculus III" by David Dew Bruner
2024
graphite on paper
15 x 11 inches unframed / 19 x 15 inches framed
David Dew Bruner is a draughtsman who pushes his limited selection of mark-making devices to their limit. He experiments with layering, engraving, and erasing to effect unique textures and gestures in each drawing. His "Oculus" series comprises geometric abstractions with a repeating theme of circles; these shapes are fragmented, eclipsing one another in varying shades of grey. This work comes with a white frame (pictured) and is signed by the artist.
Statement from the artist:
In 2011, after a 15 year gap in my career from making art, a death in the family spurred me to once again pick up my pencil. The first series was a familiar one: the beloved oak tree of the South which I had drawn since I was first taught the skill in 1972. I have always loved art history and, seeking inspiration, I began looking at other artists, eventually discovering the work of Graham Sutherland. A single detail in one of his drawings set me off down the trail of reinterpreting/digesting/reassembling his and others’ works. The original source of inspiration often gets completely lost in the new work but the concept remains intact. I spin and riff off of others’ ideas and by doing such, the viewer and I gain more insight to the original work while experiencing something altogether new. I have so far used A. J. Drysdale (the Live Oak series), Graham Sutherland (The Sutherland Project and The Figure), Picasso (Equus), Constable's cloud studies (Painting a Whisper), Manet (the Olympia series) and Velasquez (the Infanta Margarita series).
An important part of my drawing practice comes from the story about Rauschenberg erasing a de Kooning drawing. I loved the idea that something else was on that sheet of paper: pre-existing images, ghosts of other hands, total mystery. Some drawings may have up to 4 drawings on the page that I have erased; sometimes all that is left is the indentation of the mark which will only be visible when there is shading or a smudge.

20th century Belgium, Black and White Abstract pencil drawing, Etude
By Marcel Dumont
Located in Woodbury, CT
Outstanding pencil on paper Abstract drawing.
Marcel Dumont was a Liège artist who painted in oils and gouache, also produced collages and was an illustrator and engraver, doing so in a number of different styles. Early on in his career, he tended to produce paintings displaying a poetic realism but this changed over time until, in 1957, he was employing geometric abstraction and later still, the influence of pop art could be discerned. His geometric style has strong linear structure which occasionally veers to expressionism and the effect of this is an interesting sense of detachment that the viewer of the work can feel and one engages with the subject on a different level than one would normally expect. A critic wrote of him," Sometimes expressionist, sometimes linear, the abstraction forms itself willingly, in Marcel Dumont's world, to leave the rectangular structure to connect to carefully prepared tones. He retains also, in his abundant output, a few poetic pop-art collages together with a number of drawings and engravings illustrating Stefan Zweig...
