Conceptual artist Adel Abdessemed, like William Lamson and Cai Guo-Qiang, creates situations based on deliberate actions—or “acts” as he calls them—carried out on everyday materials, which he documents with videos, photographs, and later juxtaposes with a sculptural remainder from the action itself. In Grand canyon (2008), Abdessemed dangled from a precipice over the canyon’s abyss and carved the single word “DEATH” into the underside of the boulder from which he was hanging. The work consisted of Abdessemed's daring act, as well as photograph of it and the engraved rock itself, relocated to the gallery.

"Red Poppies" is a sculpture of painted aluminum on a polished aluminum base, belonging to Sultan’s famous Flower series. The artist is credited for the revival of the still life tradition where the image is deconstructed to the basic elements, thus Sultan’s work remains both abstract and representational.

The statue, which bears the title of L.O.V.E., stands for Libertà, Odio, Vendetta, Eternità (Freedom, Hate, Vengeance, Eternity),was created in 2010 to stay in Piazza Affari (business district) in Milan. The artist himself states that the statue is an anti-fascist statement, transforming Italy’s Fascist hand salute from the 1930s by cutting off the fingers and mutilating the hand. The fingers, except the medium one, are not flexed but cut off. Nevertheless the impression is an unambiguous “fuck you” to the world of bankers and CEOs.This edition, 1:28 scale reproductions of the original statue, was released by Seletti in May 2014 and is made of concrete painted white.
“My ideas are all the same but look different.„
—Maurizio Cattelan
