About the Item

Yelena Popova, who lives and works in Nottingham, is a British artist who was born in 1978 in the USSR. Before she studied art at the prestigious Royal College in London (between 2009-2011), where she graduated with the Master Degree in 2011, she had studied Set Design and Technology at the Theater School, Moscow (1995-2000), and received a Postgraduate Diploma at Central Saint Martins in London (2007). From her graduate exhibition Charles Saatchi acquired a larger group of works. Her background as an artist who was born behind the so-called Iron Curtain, when Socialism was still very much alive and when the world had not even thought about Perestroika and Glasnost, explains her interest in political topics and in a practice of art that has relevance (or at least a relation) to issues that concern our societies. This attitude is the basis for the understanding not only of her videos or computer-installations, but also of her paintings, even though these look rather abstract and thus seemingly indifferent in regards to the issues mentioned above. Popova herself describes the paintings of the period around 2017 as a ‘hypnotic abstraction’ and relates them and their repetitive circular gestures to the world of computer codes and – that is the basic foundation – to the world of money and its flow through our economic systems. Yelena Popova started to relate her painting to the issues of money flows when reading about a group of anarchists around the photographer, engineer and inventor Leon Warnerke, that attempted to crush Russia's (and with it the world's) economy at the end of the 19th century – by flooding the market with an excess of forged banknotes. So, the global market, the invisibility (and enormous effectiveness) of the financial currents, the fact that the bank notes abstract the value by certifying it, all play a role for these canvases. The hypnotic effect of the movement of the capital is formally empathized by the repetitiveness of curvilinear gestures in the paintings. Popova’s delicate painting installations play against the conventions of painting display, the use of wooden elements of modern furniture (as a metaphor for the modernism and utopian thought brought forward in modern design), respectively the equilibrium of the installation can be seen as an equivalent of a (still utopian?) dream of balance of the economic powers. The paintings are made with Popova’s own medium with the layers of transparent paint creating a bodiless image, similar to the immateriality of digital images and of the abstraction of money’s value. The present work measures 82 x 147.1 cm in total, the individual canvases measure 82 x 66.3 cm, the wooden element measures 31.6 x 14.5 cm. Yelena Popova was a ‘Visiting Professor at Helsinki Fine Art Academy’ in 2017-18. She has enjoyed several prestigious residencies in the last couple of years, like – for instance - at Girton College, University of Cambridge. And she enjoys to be constantly shown in institutional solo-exhibitions, such as “The Scholarstones Project“ in Manchester’s Holden Gallery (2020), „Townlets“ in Wakefield’s The Art House (2018), „Elements“ in Cambridges Girton College, University of Cambridge (2017), „After Image“ in Nottingham’s Nottingham Contemporary (2016), „Unsensed“ in Newcastle’s Hatton Gallery, or „Recite a Painting“ in Warwickshire’s Upton House, National Trust, or in Basel’s Kunst Raum Riehen (2013).
