About the Item
This is part of my "Message in a Bottle" series, drawn from letters written by my grandfather (whom I never met) to my grandmother while he was a young man serving in the US Army during WW1. In many letters, he begged her to write. In one he implored her "please write soon to take me out of the blue." I found the line powerful and poignant and thus the sub-series began. Feeling isolated and yearning to reconnect are hardly unique to war - they can occur during a global pandemic or simply everyday life. In the Take Me Out of the Blue series, I try to reflect both the joyous dream of reconnecting and the "blue" - the longing that befalls us now and then. As it turns out, I created many of these pieces just prior to the war in Ukraine, from where my grandmother's family fled to escape the pogroms of the late 1800's. I put down many layers of letters, words, acrylic, graphite, etc., then sand and pull up sections to reveal the history of what lay underneath.
