About the Item

Marie Laforey is a self-taught artist based in New York, US who maintains a sustainable art practice using primarily organic material. Laforey enjoys the tactility of working with organic mediums and learning how to craft preserved moss, clay, feathers and other natural elements into beautiful abstract compositions. Primarily inspired by nature, repetition, patterns, texture and geometry are essential elements that are omnipresent in her works. About her ceramic works: Laforey recent ceramic works are unique pieces that alter in patterns to give an illusion of movement and depth by using clay’s potential for building sculptural dimension. The repetitive use of a unique element, the circle is centered to her work. The circle has often been associated with the female and to Mother Earth. It has no beginning and no end, it is the whole, the essence of things. It symbolizes the ongoing energy found in nature. Inspired by the scales of fish, Marie Laforey’s Squamae ceramic Series use a repetitive, circular design that echoes the texture and rhythm of natural forms. Like a diary entry, each "scale or dots" in her work represents a fragment of life, blending the ordered and the chaotic in a way that mirrors both personal reflection and the natural world’s constant cycles. The simplicity and uniformity of her works invite contemplation on time, memory, and transformation, offering a glimpse into an emotional or personal experience, much like a page in a diary. Her works have been placed into various private collections in the US, Europe and hospitality facilities. She is represented by Muriel Guepin Gallery in New York City.
