About the Item

Patty deGrandpre’s “The Beauty on the Way There” is a predominately turquoise blue, black, grey, and red contemporary abstract landscape represented on a 16 x 20 x 2 inch “Ampersand Claybord” block embracing creative photography, mixed media, and collage. Snapshots of a Western United States highway and it’s vast scenic surroundings are printed on Awagami Bamboo Japanese paper in both black and white as well as monochromatic red. The prints are cropped and combined with thoughtfully shaped monoprint fragments and collaged onto smooth fields of turquoise and grey hued water based block printing ink. The graphic design approach to this modern composition is appreciated as the viewer recognizes a glimpse through a car window of distant mountains and roadside terrain. A rectangular red and blue print reminiscent of vintage floral wallpaper provides a visual surprise as it sits amongst the distinct photographic images. This one of a kind piece is wired and ready to hang but remains unframed to appreciate the natural wood sides of the block as well as allowing the collector to choose their own method of framing. The artist’s name and year of creation are handwritten on the back of this striking artwork. Patty deGrandpre’s travels and everyday life experiences become the catalyst for her art making. Her vast catalog of photographs are digitally manipulated, deconstructed, cropped, then printed and layered within other media. deGrandpre’s graphic approach to her work and her inclination for utilizing existing images lends itself to her skill in combining the pictorial and familiar with the abstract. deGrandpre is a New Mexico based artist whose work has been shown both regionally and nationally. She is represented by Fountain Street Gallery based in Boston, Ma.

Artist Patrick O'Boyle demonstrates an abstract landscape with distinct formations. He uses acrylic glaze and washes to establish color, shape, and pattern placement. Pages of old dictionaries and collage papers add points of interest to the composition. "This painting is purely an abstracted reference to places I have sketched on location," says Patrick.

About the Artist
Patrick O'Boyle primarily paints in a studio, rarely using reference material other than his own thoughts and dreams. He always paints in a series of five - at the end of the fifth painting he revisits and reworks all of them until he feels they're complete. Using extra-long handles on his brushes, Patrick paints at a distance from the canvas so he can see the works evolve as a whole from the one color he starts with to the vibrant array at the end.
