Savannah-based artist Trish Andersen’s “Looking Out, Looking In” is a new series of three dimensional tufted fiber works that explore the balance between daydreaming, being present and finding comfort through change. Recognizing what we all carry with us, through our many life-changes, the visceral memories of small moments and objects - the patterns on a couch, the stitches on a shirt, a floral arrangement, a neighbor’s garden - as she herself transitioned into a new stage in her life. This series attempts to describe those mementos.
Anything living knows stretches of dormancy - when there is nothing to do but lean into the lull and let it unfold - like the things you’ve packed up and carried with you from one life into another - sources of cognitive comfort from physical things,” says Trish. “Some compress neatly, falling into loose piles that bounce back without effort into the forms we recognize, others crumple and wrinkle and distort, forever holding where they were creased, while others fray and dissolve, leaving an outline that blurs and becomes something different.
Looking out: the patterned cushion of the carpet or the couch, the soft blanket that warmed you, the dots and lines on the shirt you wore when you were scared and exhausted but did it anyway, the bright colors of the curtains you hung, flowers in bloom. There was a time when they were simply bulbs underground.
Looking in: what you nurture in your arms, in your mind's eye. The bright spots that you focus on, how they grow and multiply as you feel toward a balance between instant gratification and slow change, vivid daydreams and full presence, stillness and action. Seeking out the sort of comfort that doesn't shroud or numb, but lifts you up and bolsters you through challenge and change; up through the dirt, into the sun. Repeat.
Originally from Dalton, Georgia, often referred to as “The Carpet Capital of the World,” Trish holds a BFA in Fibers from the Savannah College of Art and Design. Her work has been featured at Design Miami, Atlanta Contemporary and has been commissioned by Coca-Cola, Kimpton Hotels, Google and BlackRock Financial among others.

Trish Andersen
Trish Andersen is inspired by the work of Sheila Hicks, Cy Twombly, Judith Scott and Nick Cave. As an interdisciplinary artist born and raised in Dalton, Georgia The Carpet Capital of the World, Andersen's initial attraction to the process of tufting was a means to reconnect with and explore her roots. Years after attending the Savannah College of Art and Design, where she graduated with a BFA in Fibers and moving on to live and work in Brooklyn, New York, she began using tufting as a medium for art-making. This process became an examination of the notion that a thing or a way of being can run in our blood, that perhaps by observing the characteristics of personal origin and establishing commonality and community around those that reverberate in the present, one may be able to begin unearthing the elusive authentic self. Andersen currently lives and works in Savannah, Georgia.

Linda Kamille Schmidt plays with emotional connections and memory in her smaller, framed works. In their encasements, each collage appears as a portal; a well of both excitement and sentimentality. Her transparent and opaque fabrics mingle together with an almost casual ease. Schmidt’s hand is evident in the cut, placement, and suturing of each strip. The artist vacillates between precise machine and loose, wobbly hand-sewn stitches. Her subtle use of pins in the works act as focal points for the eye as it dances around the celebration of color and texture. As a result, her works refuse the sterility of manufacturing, and challenge the reductive elision of perfectionism and femininity. This sense of touch evokes a closeness with the fabric, almost inviting contact. A hot frenzy of geometric forms, Schmidt’s fabric swatches about and overlap to form a kaleidoscopic play with depth and recession. Coupled with the scale of these smaller pieces, Schmidt draws her viewer forward, and entices them to fall into her mesmerizing displays.
Linda Kamille Schmidt is originally from Kansas where she attended Bethel College and where most of her family still lives. She received an MA and MFA in drawing and painting from the University of Iowa in Iowa City. She has lived and worked in Brooklyn, NY, since 1989.
