Art Sz: 19 1/2"H x 15 1/2"W Frame Sz: 26 1/2"H x 22 1/2"W Period 'bronzed' gilt frame w/ brass name-plaque Petee-Wrack (USA) 1925 – November 13, 1954 Wrack (GB) x Marguerite (USA), by Celt (USA) Family 4-n Almost forgotten now because of his younger half brother, Gallant Fox, Petee-Wrack was the horse that began Marguerite's reputation as an important broodmare. While he never became a champion, he won important races at 3, 4 and 5. Unfortunately, he was an indifferent sire. Race record 48 starts, 12 wins, 9 seconds, 3 thirds, US$98,990 1927: 2nd Pimlico Futurity (USA, 8FD, Pimlico) 2nd Walden Handicap (USA, 8FD, Pimlico) 1928: Won Travers Midsummer Derby (USA, 10FD, Saratoga) 3rd Maryland Handicap (USA, 10FD, Laurel) 1929: Won Philadelphia Handicap (USA, 8.5FD, Havre de Grace) Won Merchants' and Citizens' Handicap (USA, 9.5FD, Saratoga) Won Metropolitan Handicap (USA, 8FD, Belmont) Won Twin City Handicap (USA, 10FD, Belmont) Won Olambala Handicap (USA, 8FD, Saratoga) 2nd Suburban Handicap (USA, 10FD, Belmont) 2nd Carter Handicap (USA, 7FD, Aqueduct) 3rd Manhattan Handicap (USA, 8FD, Belmont) 1930: Won Suburban Handicap (USA, 10FD, Belmont) Won Baltimore Autumn Handicap (USA, 8F+70fD, Pimlico) 2nd Manhattan Handicap (USA, 8FD, Belmont) 2nd Arlington Gold Cup (USA, 10FD, Arlington Park) Assessments Rated seventh among American 3-year-old males of 1928 by The Blood-Horse. Rated fifth among American older males of 1929 by The Blood-Horse. Rated sixth among American older males of 1930 by The Blood-Horse. As an individual A tough, sound bay horse, Petee-Wrack was game and determined in a drive. He handled off going well. As a stallion According to Jockey Club records, Petee-Wrack sired 93 winners (49.2%) and 7 stakes winners (3.7%) from 189 named foals. He gained some note as a sire of jumpers, getting two winners of the Maryland Hunt Cup and an American Grand National winner. Notable progeny Brother Jones (USA), Columbiana (USA), Peterski (USA), Pine Pep (USA). Connections Petee-Wrack was bred by Belair Stud (William Woodward, Sr.). He was owned by John R. Macomber, who purchased the colt from the 1926 Saratoga yearling sale. Pedigree notes Petee-Wrack is inbred 5x5 to 1873 Derby Stakes winner Doncaster and Rouge Rose through the full sister and brother Rose of Lancaster and Bend Or (assuming that Bend Or was produced from Rouge Rose as officially shown in the General Stud Book; see The Mystery of Bend Or.) He is a half brother to 1930 American Horse of the Year Gallant Fox, English champion 2-year-old male Foxbrough and the good stakes winner Fighting Fox, all by Sir Gallahad III. He is also a half brother to multiple stakes producers Maraschino, Marigal and Marguery, likewise sired by Sir Gallahad III. Petee-Wrack's dam Marguerite is a half sister to the good stakes winner Cloudland (by Wrack) and is out of Fairy Ray (by Radium), a half sister to three English stakes winners. Fun facts Petee-Wrack was the namesake for an allowance purse at the now-defunct Rockingham Park.

Alfred Wheeler, Oil On Panel, Pretty Polly 1906
Located in Pewsey, GB
Alfred Wheeler (1852-1932) Oil on Panel of the Brilliant Racehorse Pretty Polly. Signed and Dated 1906 with Jockey Danny Maher up and Trained by R Gilpin and Owner Major Eustace Loder. Alfred Wheeler was born near Bath in Somerset to John Alfred Wheeler (1821-1877), who retired early from the Army to pursue a successful painting career. Alfred is thought to have studied under his father and to have worked closely with him. He married Catherine Muspratt in 1874 and moved next door to his father at Raglan Villas, Bath. Alfred then followed his father when he moved to Hanwell. Alfred and Catherine had six children of whom Walter Herbert and John Frederick became artists. The Wheeler family specialised in sporting subjects such as horseracing and foxhunting. They also painted animal portraits. There is often confusion between Alfred Wheeler and his father because their style is so similar and they both signed J. A. Wheeler or A. Wheeler senior. They even painted some of the same racehorses and both received commissions from Baron Rothschild and the Prince of Wales. Alfred's work is thought to be less prolific. However, Alfred did contribute to many of his father's paintings toward the end of his life. Generally, Alfred's pictures tend to have more of a photographic quality about them than those of his father. Pretty Polly (March 1901 – 17 August 1931) was an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. One of the greatest fillies ever to race in Britain, she won fifteen consecutive races and was only the fifth horse to win the British Fillies Triple Crown since its inception in 1814. Pretty Polly also became one of the greatest broodmares of the century. Pretty Polly was bred and owned by Major Eustace Loder and trained by Peter Gilpin, she won nine races from nine starts as a two-year-old in 1903. The following year, Pretty Polly won the 1,000 Guineas as 1-4 favourite, winning easily by three lengths in record time. Other wins as a three-year-old were The Oaks, the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot, the Nassau Stakes at Goodwood, the St. Leger Stakes (completing the Fillies' Triple Crown) and the Park Hill Stakes with jockey William Lane. Pretty Polly stayed in training as a four and five-year-old, winning six more races, including the Coronation Cup...
