Edwin Loder
Fritz’; and A friend (two terriers)

1860

About the Item

Edwin Loder of Bath (1827–1885) ‘Fritz’; and A friend Oil on card, each 5¼ x 6½ in. (13.3 x 16.6 cm.) A pair (2) This charming pair of Victorian terrier portraits by Edwin Loder captures two attentive little dogs in crisp profile, their heads turned with expressive alertness against plain dark grounds. The left-hand painting is inscribed Fritz — a rough-coated, white and tan terrier who appears repeatedly in Loder’s work. It is likely that Fritz was the artist’s own dog, as he also features in other compositions, including The Ambush. Beautifully rendered in oil on card, these jewel-like studies display Loder’s gift for lifelike characterisation and his affection for the terrier breed.
