The pronounced technique is the first thing that strikes you when viewing the works of Jan Grotenbreg (1946). It is innovative and unique. The result of his idiosyncratic working method can be compared to Roman and Medieval murals, the so-called fresco in which people paint directly in wet lime.
At the time, fresco technique was a decorative art form in Europe. However, it is not the decorative element that inspires and interests Jan, but the weathered appearance of the surviving fresco paintings. That is what he wanted to see in his own work. In 2000 he started experimenting with cement on linen. This technique is so special, because cement is a building material and does not stick to canvas. After many attempts, Grotenbreg has found a solution to this problem with modern binders.
An impressive series of animal studies followed. Jan Grotenbreg only paints animals he has an affinity with. Animals such as the horse, the cow and the bull, as well as lesser-known animals such as the protected bird of prey, the black-capped vulture, the Egyptian Nile bird Ibis and the endangered house sparrow, have been laid down on linen by Grotenbreg in a layer of gray cement with acrylic paint in black-brown color nuances.
The texture and composition of the applied cement is a very important part of his work. That's what makes it intriguing. The way in which the cement is applied determines the decisiveness of the work even more than the image. The animals, especially the sparrows, sometimes only cover a very small part of the canvas. It is clear that the emphasis is on technology. The charm of Jan Grotenbreg's work lies in the imitation of that weathering. But the animals portrayed also play a role in this and are not exempt from rendered weariness. They give a beautiful antique impression...

This body of work focuses on a combination of texture, color, and composition. Each piece is manipulated with a unique surface finish of textures. Irena Orlov’s artwork begins spontaneously and gives expression to personal creativity and insight. Each piece is unique in design.

About an Artist:
Irena Orlov is a Los Angeles-based contemporary multidisciplinary visual artist whose work uses a combination of both traditional and new media. In a blending of traditional and new media, Irena Orlov developed special techniques which continue to give her art a unique look and aesthetic. While the majority of her works are done with mixed media, she also creates with acrylic, oil, pastel, watercolors and pencil.
Much of her art has been implemented in renowned hotels, wellness and corporate settings across the world.

Very well executed oil on canvas painting of a dramatic horse race by the German/American artist Johannes Schiefer. Signed lower right. Condition is excellent. Overall framed in narrow gold leaf frame that measures 21 by 19 inches. Provenance: Contemporary Masters Gallery, Madison Avenue, New York See gallery label and title verso. (Last photograph).
Johannes Schiefer was born in 1896 in Alsace and attended the Düsseldorf Academy in Germany. He later moved to Paris where he began his formal art training. Schiefer lived and painted in southern France and Europe until he, his wife, and young daughter fled France for New York in 1942. In the US he continued to paint and exhibit his work at New York galleries. Later in life he was the curator of the Parrish Art Museum in Southampton, Long Island.
Born in the late 19th century, Schiefer was no doubt introduced to impressionism as a young art student, and it is not all that surprising that he chose to continue to paint in a post impressionist style. However, his paintings differ from period impressionist paintings...
