BIOGRAFÍA DE ANTONI CLAVÉ I SANMARTÍ (Barcelona, 1913 – Saint Tropez, Francia, 2005)
Antoni Clavé es una de las más relevantes figuras del arte contemporáneo español. Formado en la Escuela de Bellas Artes de San Jordi de Barcelona, Clavé se dedica en un primer periodo al grafismo publicitario, la ilustración y las artes decorativas. En 1936 toma parte activa en la Guerra Civil, en las filas republicanas, lo que le lleva a exiliarse a Francia al terminar la contienda. Este mismo año de 1939 expone los dibujos que realizó en los campos de batalla. Se instala en París, donde conoció a Vuillard, Bonnard y Picasso. Gozaba ya de un gran prestigio internacional en el momento en que se inicia su reconocimiento en España, a partir de su exposición en la sala Gaspar de Barcelona, en 1956. En paralelo realiza ilustraciones para la obra “Gargantúa y Pantagruel”, lo que le llevó a familiarizarse con la iconografía medieval. En esta misma década de los cincuenta es cuando inicia su intensa labor en el mundo del ballet y del teatro, alcanzando gran fama en el mundo de la escenografía internacional. En 1952 realiza los decorados para la película “Hans Christian Andersen”, de Charles Vidor, y obtiene una candidatura al premio Óscar. En 1954 abandona la decoración para dedicarse a la pintura. Fue premiado en la Hallimark de Nueva York en 1948, en la Bienal de Venecia de 1954 y en la Bienal Internacional de Tokio de 1957. En 1984 el Estado Español reconoció su valía artística con la exposición de más de cien de sus obras en el pabellón español de la Bienal de Venecia. Ese mismo año le fue concedida la Medalla de Oro de la Generalitat de Cataluña. La obra de Clavé se encuentra, entre muchos otros, en los museos de Bellas Artes de Bilbao, Tate Gallery, de Arte Moderno de París, el British Museum de Londres, de Arte Moderno de Tokio y en el Reina Sofía de Madrid.

Antoni Clavé
Antoni Clavé was born on April 5, 1913, in Barcelona. Clavé was a Catalan master painter, printmaker, sculptor, stage designer and costume designer. He was nominated for two Academy Awards namely Best Art Direction and Best Costume Design, for his work on the 1952 film Hans Christian Andersen. Clavé was one of Spain's best known and most celebrated artists. His work evolved from a baroque, ornamental style to a pure, minimal aesthetic. In his later years, his work was completely abstract, employing expressive lines and exploring the boundaries of collage, object-trouve, shading, texture and color. He was trained at the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona, where he was taught by Ángel Ferrant and Félix Mestres. With his works being influenced by artists such as Bonnard, Vuillard and Rouault. He was best known for his lyrical abstractions, works which combine paint with collage. Clavé died on September 1, 2005, in Saint-Tropez, France.
