About the Item

Denied Warhol Mona Lisa Reversal Silkscreen Painting Charles Lutz 20 x 26" 2008 Silkscreen on canvas Lutz's 2007 ''Warhol Denied'' series gained him international attention calling into question the importance of originality or lack thereof in the work of Andy Warhol. The authentication/denial process of the [[Andy Warhol Art Authentication Board]] was used to create value by submitting recreations of Warhol works for judgment with the full intention for the works to be formally marked "DENIED". The final product of the conceptual project being "officially denied" "Warhol" paintings authored by Lutz. (All works have the Warhol Art Authentication Board's Denied stamp on the back) Also known for Babel, an installation work Lutz exhibited at the 2013 Armory Fair in New York City which caused near riots as he invited the fairgoers to take cardboard versions of the Brillo Box Sculptures. Lutz's Denied version of Andy Warhol's Mona Lisa is a reference to Warhol's idea of retrospective, Where in the 1980's he revisited a number of his famous subjects including Liz Taylor, Marilyn Monroe, the Campbell's Soup Cans, Flowers and Electric Chairs. In 1963, The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York exhibited the Mona Lisa on loan from the Louvre. Over one million people clamored to see her during her stay at the Museum, one of which was Andy Warhol. Undoubtedly, this was a major experience for Warhol, and the catalyst for his series of Mona Lisa from the same year which he revisited later in his career. Using a monochromatic pallet of warm cream tones, Lutz's Denied Mona Lisa is a triumph in minimalism, while also being extremely complex in its implications regarding the idea of the original. This particular work is not only a Denied Warhol based on Leonardo Da Vinci, but also references Marcel Duchamp whose work, L.H.O.O.Q., is a ready-made mocking the original Da Vinci masterpiece. Lutz has been exhibited and done major projects with The New Museum, New York, NY, The Armory Show, New York, NY, Carnegie Museum, Pittsburgh, PA, The Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh, PA, Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art, Rotterdam, Netherlands, Artipelag Museum, Stockholm Sweden amongst others. Lutz lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
