Adam Handler
Colorful, Faux-Naïf Painting by Adam Handler 'Toki and Slimy'

2023

About the Item

'Toki and Slimy' by Adam Handler, 2023. Oil stick and spray paint on canvas, 30 x 24 in. This painting by contemporary artist Adam Handler features a single figure depicted in his signature faux-naif, child-like style. The figure is rendered in black and white and includes sweeping strokes of colorful, neon spray paint. Adam Handler's work draws from a faux-naïf aesthetic, a style marked by its intentional simplicity and sincerity. Using oil sticks to produce bold lines, vibrant colors, and textured compositions, he achieves an almost childlike directness that belies the deeper, layered narratives of love and loss within each composition. Handler's recent Abduction series is a deeply personal reflection, exploring themes of love, family, and the longing for connections with those he has lost. Through whimsical scenes featuring ghostly figures, he invites viewers to connect with the delicate balance of lightheartedness and sorrow. Handler's vibrant female figures, inspired by the abstract forms of Willem de Kooning, embody his own playful, yet reflective perspective on memory and presence. These figures maintain a raw simplicity that speaks to childhood innocence, which captures the fragile beauty of connection and loss, blending personal memories with universal themes of love and family. Adam Handler, born in Queens, NY in 1986, studied Life Drawing in Italy and graduated from SUNY's Purchase College with a major in Art History in 2008. Handler has mounted numerous solo and group exhibitions worldwide, including New York, Europe, Africa, and Seoul, South Korea. His work has been shown extensively at major art fairs including Art New York, Art Market Hamptons, Art Context Miami, and the Armory Print Fair. Notable exhibitions include Madelyn Jordon Fine Art, Scarsdale, NY, Brega Artist Space, Seoul, Korea; Rarity Gallery, Mykonos, Greece; Janet Lehr Fine Art, Bridgehampton, NY; Concordia College: OSilas Gallery, Bronxville, NY; Maison 10, New York, NY; Fred Torres Gallery, NY; Vered Gallery, East Hampton, NY; and The Children's Museum of Westchester, Rye, NY.

Hunt Slonem, Multi-colored Bird Oil painting, 'Finches'
By Hunt Slonem
Located in White Plains, NY
'Finches' by Hunt Slonem, 2022. Oil on canvas, 48 x 48 in. This painting features Slonem's signature finches in white, red, blue, and green on a white background. Considered one of the great colorists of his time, Slonem’s neo-expressionist paintings feature an exuberant and bold, fauvist palette to emphasize his beloved menagerie of animals. Through the application of lavish, lush colors, Slonem’s painterly style continues to be fresh and innovative bordering on Pop Art aesthetics. Depicting his signature motifs of repeating whimsical animal imagery, the artist’s devotion to nature and its inhabitants are apparent. Born in Kittery, Maine in 1951, Hunt Slonem graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Painting and Art History from Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana. Slonem later attended the prestigious Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine, where he was exposed to influential artists from the New York area including Alex Katz, Alice Neel, Richard Estes, Jack Levine, Louise Nevelson and Al Held. This exposure played a pivotal role in Slonem’s artistic career, as it aided in his decision to move to New York in 1973. Since 1977, Slonem has had over 250 solo exhibitions at prestigious galleries. Museums, both domestic and international, have collected his work, among them Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, the Whitney, the Miro Foundation, and the New Orleans Museum of Art. 'Rona Wars: Cyberpunk Edition, ' by XVALA, Mixed Media Painting
By XVALA
Located in Oklahoma City, OK
This 61" x 44" mixed media painting by the artist XVALA is from his series 'Pandemic Collection: 6.' The painting was created with iridescent oil stick and spray paint on a screen print of a Star Wars poster. The abstracted "Basquiat-inspired" work depicts a silver robot with red eyes and large white teeth on a purple and blue background with the text 'cyber punk' in red at the bottom of the painting. 2020 twisted human reality in a number of ways no one could ever have predicted. XVALA pays tribute to this by melding the original Star Wars movie poster with the unexpected weirdness of the 21st Century. By combining a classic sci-fi villain with a modern symbol of literal Cyberpunk, XVALA shows the COVID-19 virus aimed straight toward the earth with a mission to destroy it. Exhibited during the Pandemic Paintings exhibition at the Meme Ranch August 7th, 2020. XVALA's art illuminates the hidden fallout spawned from our high tech Internet age. His' Fear Google' campaign exposed the decay of privacy and 'No Delete' used hacked nude celebrity photos to highlight loss of control over personal information. The artist has worked with trash from the homes of Mark Zuckerberg, Steve Jobs, and others, as well as dirt from the graves of George Orwell and Aldous Huxley. The dirt appears in the 'New World Order' collection as part of a pyramidal, 3D printed, living ant farm...
