Artist’s Statement:
These works are an extension of a small series of realistic paintings that I did of graves in snow. I’ve always been fascinated by gravestones, specifically stones that have worn away so that no information remains on them. In a way they become markers for not just a specific person, but symbols for everyone's mortality. In these paintings I’ve reduced them to their simple shapes, devoid of any detail. The stones, sometimes in large groups randomly heaped, sometimes alone, become characters in an ambiguous landscape symbolizing our individual struggles with mortality.
