About the Item

An extraordinary example of Alessandro Bernardino Deho's grotesque and fantastic production, this painting illustrates an imaginative scene in which anthropomorphic insects and dwarves face each other in a surreal battle. The work is embellished with symbolic and ironic details: in the lower left corner, a dwarf woman hatches eggs from which little owls hatch, while her husband pours her red wine in a scene that suggests a burlesque interpretation of fertility and domesticity. A native of Cremona and a pupil of Angelo Massarotti, Deho trained artistically between Cremona and Rome, and then developed a unique repertoire characterized by religious themes and burlesque works. He is known for introducing the genre of "bambocciate" to northern Italy, approaching the style of Faustino Bocchi from Brescia. His compositions, laden with humor and satirical wit, reflect the vices and virtues of the society of his time through ironic and grotesque language. Deho's style, described by his contemporaries as bizarre and unconventional, is distinguished by his use of fantastic and fairy-tale themes. This painting is juxtaposed with other works by the artist, such as the Quattro scene gioiose di nani and the Toeletta di dama, the latter reproduced in the volume Pittura a Cremona dal Romanico al Settecento (edited by Mina Gregori and Luisa Bandera, Milan 1990). A rare and fascinating work, perfect for collectors who appreciate fantastic art and the grotesque of the 17th-18th centuries.
