Making Room - Encaustic Landscape Figure Child Table Still Life Tree, 2016

2016

About the Item

In this contemporary encaustic (pigmented beeswax) painting on panel, a peaceful landscape scene in shades of pale sky blue and light yellow accented with teal blue sculptural details along the lower part of the composition. Signed and titled on verso. A tall, graceful female figure in a long dress sits at the end of a round dining table while a child peers over the table's edge. The table is set with a still life arrangement, with tiny shapes in the tree branches overhead appear at first glance to be small birds but, upon closer inspection, are actually tiny swaddled infants called Guaguas, a native Quichua word from South America, a universal and metaphorically rich symbol that runs throughout Cecile Chong's work. The lines in the painting, the outlines of the figures and the sinewy branches and leaves on the tree overhead, are delicately incised. Signed and titled on verso. A multimedia artist working in painting, sculpture and installation, Cecile Chong focuses on cultural assimilation and the development of individual identity. Chong uses encaustic to create cross-cultural contemporary narratives. By juxtaposing appropriated images from sources including vintage children's books or found objects such as circuit board parts, her work refers to interculturalism and transculturation. Born in South America to Chinese parents, Chong learned about her own cultural heritage as an outsider and the entanglement of culture, history and interpretation are themes that are of special interest to her. Encaustic painting, also known as hot wax painting, involves using heated beeswax to which colored pigments are added. The word comes originally from the Greek word “enkaustikis” meaning to “burn in” and the process dates to the 5th Century. The liquid or paste is applied to a surface—usually prepared wood. Metal tools and special brushes can be used to shape the paint before it cools, or heated metal tools can be used to manipulate the wax once it has cooled onto the surface. Because wax is used as the pigment binder, encaustics can be sculpted as well as painted. Other materials can be encased or collaged into the surface, or layered, using the encaustic medium and heat to fuse them to the surface.

tempio di Antonino e Faustina

Urbex is the English acronym for urban exploration and is an activity that consists of searching for and locating abandoned infrastructure with the goal of visiting, photographing and conveying its contents, with particular involvement of methodologies from geography, anthropology, sociology to cultural studies. Her works have been in the past approached to the works of Anselm Kiefer (b. 1945) and Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720-1770), but in Gullotta's paintings the absence of color makes the spaces particularly ethereal, allowing them to be ideally lifted to new places and to new life. We often speak of a "brain drain," but in this case we are truly happy to be able to say that this is a "return," and an important one: an artist of international caliber who has decided to entrust her return to her homeland to Almach Art...

"Pacifica XVIII" by Carrie Goller, Encaustic/Mixed Media Painting, Ocean Wave
Located in Denver, CO
Carrie Goller's (US based) "Pacifica XVIII" is an original, encaustic/mixed media painting that depicts a large crashing wave. This piece is unframed yet ready to hang. Born and raised on Washington’s tiny Bainbridge Island, artist Carrie Goller recalls being advised as a child to pursue a career in fine art. After an early career as a paralegal, a life-changing experience led her to become a serious and dedicated artist. Once I finally indulged my need to create art, the door was opened and I haven’t looked back. I’ve been making up for lost time; a bit obsessed. Art is now a necessity for me. I find true expression and balance in that world, says Goller. Goller is inspired by simple, sensuous organic forms and the realm of colors, shapes and textures found in nature. Her thoughtful approach to subject matter can be evidenced from her tender still life work, along with a passion for rendering impressionist oils of daily life. From her Bainbridge Island and Hood Canal...
