Helen Bradley
Waiting at Liverpool to go to the Isle of Man

About the Item

Image dimensions: 46cm x 62cm / 18 inches x 24½ inches Framed dimensions: 55.8cm x 71cm / 22 inches x 28 inches Signed with fly insignia (lower left); further signed, inscribed and dated 'Waiting at Liverpool to go to the Isle of Man/Father decided we should all go for a holiday/to the Isle of Man. He said the sail and the/pleasant air of the Island would do us good. George/and I were a little afraid of the paddle steamer. It/made such a noise. Grandma and the two aunts and/the dogs, Gyp and Barney, came with us, so also did/Miss Carter (who wore pink) and Mr Taylor (the Bank Manager). I heard the aunts whisper that/perhaps, with the journey across the water/being so romantic, Mr Taylor might propose/to Miss Carter, but he was most attentive to/Aunt Frances and Aunt Charlotte in turn which/made our holiday most enjoyable and the/year was 1906/Helen Layfield Bradley 1969' (on a label attached to the backboard). Condition: The work has been inspected under ultra violet light and shows small, isolated areas and spots of dark fluoresence to the sky, jetty and sea (between the steamer and quay), which may denote minor restoration. Helen Bradley began painting her unique and charming narrative scenes at the age of sixty-five. She painted in order to show her grandchildren what life was like when she was a child. The artist transmuted her childhood memories in the everyday life of ordinary Lancashire mill folk into anecdotal art. Characterized by the frank and inhibited outlook of a young child, her bright, teeming pictures and her own delightful narrative, memorably reflect that gentle period. Folk in style, idyllic in mood, Bradleys pictures are as accomplished as they are imaginative.

By Enric Porta Mestre
Located in Barcelona, Barcelona
Title: Shepherd in the Pyrenees Artist: Enric Porta i Mestre (1898–1993) Technique: Oil on canvas Style: Post-Impressionism with Expressionist influences Dimensions: Unframed: 23.6 x 31.9 in Framed: 29.9 x 38.2 in Signature: Signed in the lower right corner as "E. Porta". Date: 1956 (according to the inscription on the back). DESCRIPTION OF THE WORK Shepherd in the Pyrenees by Enric Porta i Mestre depicts a rural scene with a striking sense of introspection and evocative charm. The painting portrays a shepherd tending to his flock amidst the mountainous landscape typical of the Catalan Pyrenees. The composition captures the serenity and beauty of nature through vibrant colors and dynamic brushstrokes. The work reflects a Post-Impressionist style with loose, bold strokes and vivid tones, combined with Expressionist influences in its ability to evoke emotions beyond the physical depiction. The energetic and textured brushwork infuses the painting with a lively rhythm, while the rich palette of greens and blues immerses the viewer in the landscape's tranquil atmosphere. In this piece, Porta i Mestre showcases a mastery of color and light, illustrating his deep connection to his homeland and its rural life, which served as a source of inspiration throughout his career. ARTIST BIOGRAPHY Enric Porta i Mestre (La Pobla de Segur, 1898–1993) was a Catalan painter known for his landscapes, still lifes, and costumbrist depictions. Trained in Lleida and Barcelona, Porta debuted in 1922 with an exhibition in the Catalan capital. He later moved to Paris to further his artistic studies, where he connected with avant-garde artists such as Miquel Villà...
