Marc Foster Grant
"Make a Splash", Large-Scale Figurative Abstract with Swimmer in Pool

2005

About the Item

This bold and dynamic figurative abstract acrylic painting on handmade paper by Marc Foster Grant (American, b. 1947) certainly makes a splash! A figure dressed in a fabulous swimwear ensemble jumps into the pool and onto a globe, causing a huge splash of water to burst forth towards the viewer. The fun, colorful, and fancifully detailed swimming outfit complete with vintage style bathing suit, matching swim cap, and flippers points to the artist's background in fashion. Signed and dated "Grant 2005" lower right. Tag on verso with title "Make a Splash" Presented in a silver metal frame and plexiglass. Image size: 27"H x 39"W. Framed Size 28.5"H x 40.5"W. Marc Foster Grant (American, b. 1947) is an artist from San Diego, CA who began showing his art at 13 years old. This led to becoming San Diego Museum’s Art Guild’s youngest member. He attended San Francisco State University in 1965 to study printmaking under John Ihle and Dennis Beal. Throughout college, Marc taught silk screening classes in his Potero Hill painting studio and worked at Museum West—an arm of New York Museum of Contemporary Crafts. Later he became the Display Director at Design Research International. He later attended the Brighton School of Art and Design in England for graduate work in printmaking. In 1973 Marc joined his wife Jeanne’s fledging dress business. The couple moved the enterprise from England, back to San Francisco where they opened their first shop, “Jeanne-Marc”, in North Beach. Under the same label they sold their small sportswear collection to high-end specialty stores including I. Magnin, Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman as well as to stores in Europe and Japan. In 1991 both Marc and Jeanne were elected to the CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America) Exhibitions and Awards: 1969, First Prize - the James D. Phelan Award for Graphics 1970, First Prize - New Paltz Intercollegiate Print Exhibition “Haircut? Yes, Please” - Victoria and Albert Museum (permanent collection) 1992 - Absolute Vodka’s Golden Shears Award for Fashion Design

Pictographs and Symbols Rain Dance Taos Society of Artists Taos New Mexico
Located in Soquel, CA
Pictographic scene by Charles Stewart (American, 1922-2011). There are several figures in the center of the piece, one of which has raised hands, as if to praise the sun above them. Surrounding the figures are symbols reminiscent of Neolithic art - spirals, handprints, and animal symbols. Signed "C. Stewart , T. S (for Taos Society of Artists)." in the lower left corner. Presented in a wood frame with vinyl faux-lizard skin wrapping, and a linen mat. Image size: 16.5"H x 21"W Charles C. Stewart (1922-2011) was born in Toledo, Ohio. From an early age he had a natural talent for the arts, so much so that during his school years, his teachers encouraged him to take classes at the Toledo Museum. He studied there for eight years. During World War II, he served with the tank destroyers in five campaigns. When he returned from the war, he studied art and sculpture at the Art Student's League in New York. He then went to Mexico for eight months to study and paint. While in Mexico, he fell in love with the country, its people and arts, vowing one day to return and live. In 1947, Stewart moved to Taos, New Mexico to start his career. He opened a frame shop and small studio and studied at the Taos Valley Art School under Louis Ribak. In 1949, he opened his own gallery. He taught art and sculpture at the Taos Art Association and at Philbrook Art Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma, as well as teaching private students. He built three homes in Taos, the last of which is known as the "Stewart House." The "Stewart House" was written up in the New Mexico Magazine in an article entitled "The House That Chuck Built" by Tricia Hurst In late 1984, Stewart and his wife, Mary Lou, were exploring the Baja in Mexico and ended up at "Land's End," a small fishing village on the Sea of Cortez called Cabo San Lucas...
