About the Item
A poised woman stands with one hand on her hip, radiating elegance and quiet strength. She is dressed in a crisp white blouse paired with a deep red skirt, while a wide-brimmed golden hat rests gracefully at her side. Her piercing blue eyes, rendered in Letsu signature style, immediately captivate the viewer, suggesting both resilience and vulnerability. To her right, a wooden table holds a red vase filled with white flowers, a delicate detail that softens the composition and adds symbolic resonance of femininity and renewal. The warm terracotta background, textured with subtle patterns, frames the subject in a timeless and dignified setting, allowing the figure to command presence while embodying grace.
This work exemplifies the power of Ghanaian contemporary art, where portraiture becomes more than likeness — it becomes narrative. Known for his bold figurative paintings, Philip Letsu bridges cultural heritage with modern aesthetics, transforming everyday subjects into icons of pride and individuality. His ability to merge symbolic detail with vibrant color has established him as a rising name in the Los Angeles contemporary art scene and a featured voice at the West Hollywood art gallery, where his work resonates strongly with collectors and curators seeking meaningful examples of modern portrait painting.

Philip Letsu is a Ghanaian artist currently living and working in Ho, Ghana. Komla’s practice is driven by the significant need to document urban lifestyles and culture. Focusing on the power memories and imagination in relation to representation and identity formation, Philip creates paintings that confronts issues surrounding representation with the intention to document that which is neglected. The artist uses both colors in his subjects, the attire they wear, and the places inhabited to evoke a sense of urban lifestyle and culture, while focusing on the power of memories and imagination.
