About the Item

Playboy Female Illustrator Shaleen Pedersen paints a surreal landscape stuffed with a plethora of faceless people, devoid of eyes, mouths, or noses. Yet, they are fully dressed in the uniforms of their profession or in their traditional cultural dress. Some are anchored to the ground. Others are depicted at attention, motionless, rising like lighter-than-air balloons into the sky. Unsigned This artwork appeared on page 75 of the August 1974 issue of Playboy Magazine, illustrating the article by William Murray titled "The Atmosphere People," with the caption "To the viewing public, they're extras; in their own world, they're stars. Framed under glass to 23.5 x 23.75 - High-end 1970s period metal frame

Modern Photography Cover, Surreal Landscape
By Mitchell Funk
Located in Miami, FL
Historically , newsstand magazines have used a standard set of practices when it came to choosing their cover image. Their goal was to use a image that people could instantly relate to. The idea being, if an image pops off the page it will attract more attention and then generate more newsstand sales. For editors, choosing a cover was first a marketing decision and then an aesthetic one. That is why most magazine covers and (that includes art magazines) pretty much looked the same. They used familiar images, mostly of celebrities, beauty people or news items of that would beckon and aggressively reach out to the prospect. In this Modern Photography Cover of August 1983, they chose a radical departure. Their cover image that was the opposite of the norm. Mitchell Funk’s Graphic Surreal Landscape...

Astrology Fantasy - "A Love by the Stars" - Sci-Fi Alignment of the Planets
Located in Miami, FL
Hane paints a dreamy nocturne - a fusion of earthy and celestial bodies with circling birds around a central vertical axis. Created on assignment for De Beers' highly published A Diamond is Forever" campaign. "A love by the stars was important. Until the right man of the wrong sign put his star on my finger. And I entered his house with my love. The artist created the painting to be the night ... so it appears a little dark in natural light. Best viewed with a top and key light to bring out the colors. For example if you bring the painting outside on a bright day.. the colors will pop. If you view inside of a dark hallway.. it will look sombre with less detail. Again, it's a nocturne. Hane painted the covers of the Collier-Macmillan editions of C.S. Lewis's Chronicles of Narnia books, as well as such Simon & Schuster publications as Carlos Castaneda's The Teachings of Don Juan and A Separate Reality. In 1963, Hane was hired to do a full-page illustration for Esquire magazine; he moved to New York in 1965. He married Elaine Miller...

Signed lower right: Bilson Bilson was born in Reykjavik, Iceland. At the age of five he moved to London, England, speaking Icelandic rather more fluently than English. At the age of nineteen he became a full-time professional: self-taught, self-propelled and completely self-supported. He has painted ever since. Bilson has lived in various countries including Australia, Hong Kong, USA, Canada, Ireland and now resides happily in Iceland. There continues to be a great deal of travelling and painting on the move, as well as continuing to exhibit worldwide. Many of Bilson’s paintings are owned by well-known people and corporations, such as Bob Hawke – former Prime Minister of Australia, Jonathon Sachs – The Chief Rabbi, Clint Eastwood, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Anne Robinson, The Von Thyssen Collection, The Romanov Collection, Westinghouse, Ashland Oil and Arrowfield Horse Stud...
