About the Item

Gordon Coutts was known for his atmospheric and impressionistic depictions of North African and Moroccan scenes. The warm, earthy tones, the depiction of a bustling marketplace, and the soft, hazy light under the moon create a dreamlike quality. Coutts was particularly drawn to the exoticism of Morocco, often painting its architecture, people, and daily life with a romanticized lens. The scene is a visual feast that captures the movement of the crowd, the glow of the buildings in the fading light, and the soft yet vibrant colors all create a sense of place and atmosphere that feels almost cinematic. It’s both lively and serene at the same time. Gordon Coutts (1868–1937) was a Scottish-born artist known for his impressionistic and atmospheric paintings, particularly of North African and Moroccan scenes. He studied at the Glasgow School of Art and later in Paris, where he was influenced by the European academic and Impressionist movements. His work often focused on exotic and sun-drenched landscapes, capturing the mood and light with rich, expressive brushstrokes.Coutts traveled extensively, but he is best known for his time in Tangier, Morocco, where he was inspired by the architecture, markets, and daily life. He had a deep appreciation for the dramatic interplay of light and shadow, which is evident in many of his works. Later in life, he settled in California, where he built the Moroccan-style villa Dar Marroc in Palm Springs, a retreat that became a gathering place for artists and writers. His paintings continue to be appreciated for their romantic and evocative depictions of faraway places, blending realism with a dreamlike quality. This painting retains a custom hand made carved wood frame covered in 23k gold.
