About the Item
My interest is to convey elements of the classical arcadian landscape paintings of the 17th and 18th century, inviting the viewer to reflect again at the sublime landscape of the past, in relation to the negative impact of human’s activity on the planet since. My reference comes originally from living for many years by the River Thames and more recently from my long walks, through the woods, following a river that periodically leads out onto several lakes along the way. The first and last light, in particular, transform these private little places into magical havens, where the trees meet the water, as the sun rises or dips behind. It's my constant effort and passion to try and capture this exquisite, elusive and vaporous light, set in a sublime landscape.

Helmut Gransow Landscape w/House & Barn "Springtime Reflections No. I"
Located in Detroit, MI
SALE ONE WEEK ONLY
“Springtown Reflections No. I” depicts the moment of change in the weather moving from harsh winter to the first warming days of spring melting the snow. The title suggests a moment to pause in farm life before the coming spring planting and also suggests a time of mental reflection on life and work. The puddles of melting snow reflect the buildings in the scene. The muted colors and slightly off kilter structures cause the buildings to appear worn but sturdy, a soft idyllic scene of rural life.

Park Spring (Impressionistic Figurative Painting of Figures in a Park Landscape)
By William Clutz
Located in Hudson, NY
Modern impressionist style figurative painting of a family in a colorful park landscape
“Park Spring” painted by William Clutz in 1996
60 x 50 inches in a natural wood floater frame
Wire backing, signed lower right
This figurative oil on canvas painting was made in 1996 by William Clutz as part of a series of works called "Crossings". These paintings were a study of NYC dwellers engaging in the simple, daily activity of crossing the street. In this piece, Clutz captures a joyful moment of a mother and father walking in a sunlit park landscape with their young child. Bright sunlight radiates through lush fall foliage and fills the scene with a soft orange light. With broad, expressionistic brushstrokes, he discovers the extraordinary in the ordinary, by emphasizing the effects of sunlight on the human form. The painting is in excellent condition and is framed in a natural wood floater frame.
More about the artist:
In New York in the early 50's and 60's, abstract expressionism was the orthodox approach to art at the time. However, Clutz was committed to his personal style that focused on abstracted human figures within urban tableaux. Working in a context of artists who challenged abstract expressionism's popularity in New York, Clutz established himself as a significant proponent of abstract figuration. His paintings focus on human figures within the urban environment, often exposing the transfiguration of his subjects as they travel through the complex light of city streets or summer parks, as shown in two of his early works.
Clutz's interest in working from direct observation of urban life was influenced by a long-standing interest in German Expressionism, as well as artists like Henri Matisse, Arshile Gorky, and Nicholas De Stael...

Cheviot in Winter (Country Landscape Painting of Hudson River in the Winter)
By John Kelly
Located in Hudson, NY
Impressionistic landscape painting of the Hudson River during the wintertime in tones of grey, white, slate, blue, dark brown and green
Oil on linen, 22 x 28 inches
John Kelly approaches the Hudson Valley landscape with the eye of an architect and the hand of an impressionist. With intense attention paid to form and light, Kelly nevertheless manages to abstract the landscape just slightly, breaking earth, sky, and atmosphere down to their most elemental qualities. In this painting, a body of water, solidified into ice, stretches toward a murky treeline. The painting is composed primarily in a palette of pale blue, gray, and pink, with white, dark green, and gray accents.
About the artist:
Hudson Valley based painter John Kelly received his education from the Art Institute of Boston and Buffalo State. He has been exhibiting around the northeastern United States since the 1970s.

Big Sur California Seascape Original Mid-Century Oil on Linen
Exceptional Seascape ainting in Oil Impasto technique by Ralph Victor Murray (American, 1897-1991). Heavy brush work of the Big Sur Coast rocks and crashing waves. In a period rustic carved frame.
Image 24"H x 30.88"W
Frame 28.25"H x 35.25"W x 2"D, frame is rustic and has some edge wear included as-is.
Ralph Victor Murray was born June 27, 1897 in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada. He was raised in Fredericton and Campbellton. He was living in Campbellton in 1910 and witnessed the whole town burn to the ground. He studied at Rothesay Academy and left school at the age of 15 to help support his mother and sisters when his father passed away. He joined the Canadian Expeditionary Forces at age 18 and served during World War 1 in England until he was stricken with Diptheria and transferred to Halifax. He was walking to work on Dec. 16, 1917 when the great explosion of Halifax took place.
After leaving the military, he traveled and worked in Canada and the United States until he ended up in San Francisco. While there he heard the California Highway Division was hiring, so he took the test and was hired as a surveyor. From 1923 to 1924 he surveyed Highway One (The Big Sur Highway) between Santa Maria and Carmel. He was retired from the State of California in 1940 and took up oil painting.
In 1941 he won 2nd place in the Santa Cruz County Fair. He was mostly self taught, however he did take some private lessons from Burton Boundey and Abel Warshawsky. His work was landscapes and seascapes in oils. He was a lifetime member of the Carmel Art Association in Carmel, California. He frequently exhibited his work there from 1940-1960. His work was also exhibited in Wells Fargo Bank, Cal Am Water Co., Monterey Savings and Loan, Pacific Gas and Electric and numerous other businesses around the Monterey Peninsula. His work was shown in the "Monterey Peninsula Herald" and was also photographed for the L. A. Times for the July 20, 1958 insert.
In the 1960's he gave private lessons to Helen Barker and Charles Lee. He also showed his work in the Helen Barker Gallery in Carmel, California. He was featured under People in the February, 1989 issue of Monterey Life. The California Art Review solicited information from him as well as California Artists.
His friends and peers were such greats as Abel Warshawsky, Frank Meyers, Myron Oliver, Armin Hansen, Arthur Hill Gilbert, Burton Boundey and Leslie Emery...
