Our oil on cardboard is a preparatory sketch for a painting dated 1920 and exhibited during the exhibition "The last impressionists: the time of intimacy" at the Musée des beaux arts de Quimper in 2019 (see photo).
Ernest Joseph Laurent, born in Gentilly on June 8, 1859 and died in Bièvres on June 25, 1929, was a French painter and lithographer. A student of Henri Lehmann at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Ernest Laurent was strongly influenced by the Impressionists, and became friends with Georges Seurat, Edmond Aman-Jean and Henri Le Sidaner. In 1885, his Annunciation, exhibited at the Salon, was bought by the State, enabling him to make a trip to Italy. From Rome, he went to Assisi, where he had a profound mystical experience that would have a lasting influence on his art. In 1919, he was elected a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts, and taught at the École des Beaux-Arts until 1929. Heir to the Impressionist technique and tempted by Symbolism, his deep religious devotion runs through most of his works. This aspect of his life ran counter to the materialism of Seurat, from whom he gradually detached himself. Although he mainly painted female portraits, which were among his favorite themes, Laurent was also the author of remarkable lithographs, which took on a faded appearance and were published in L'Estampe moderne in 1897 and the Gazette des beaux-arts in 1901, among others.

Ernest Laurent
Ernest Laurent was an exponent of Neo-Impressionism and Divisionism. He was a pupil of Ernest Hébert and a friend of Georges Seurat. In 1889, Laurent won the second prize at the Prix de Rome, and in 1890 he arrived at the French Academy in Rome. From Rome, he went to visit Assisi, where he had a mystical experience that strongly influenced his art, having focused on religious themes since then.
