About the Item

Orange Red Zebra Oddity is an acrylic painting on 30 x 30" canvas, signed 'RENÉ LALONDE' lower left and framed in a contemporary black wood frame. It is difficult to categorize the vibrant, luminous, and delightful work of René Lalonde, an art that he himself referred to as ‘New Modern Art’ and which was rooted in many other traditions from American Modernists like Thomas Hart Benton and Charles Sheeler to the psychedelia of Peter Max and most importantly the infused and magical light of Maxfield Parrish. Lalonde’s world was strongly influenced by his ‘monastery-like’ time in boarding school from the ages of 6 – 12. There, he was forced to imagine the outside world and thus developed a vivid imagination as well as what he described as an ‘inner peace’ that held throughout his life. Additionally, he was profoundly affected by the revolutionary events in the music world of the sixties, beginning with the Beatles and the British Invasion, and evolving into the psychedelic culture of the late sixties and seventies. His mature style, developed throughout the eighties and nineties shows influences from fauvism and surrealism in addition to the artists mentioned above, and yet, Lalonde’s art is always uniquely his own, not belonging to any of these art movements. That unique vision has drawn collectors for decades to artworks that express an indelible ‘je ne sais quoi’ – fascinating, strange, intriguing, and somehow emotionally satisfying. Lalonde gives us odd and enchanting still lifes, intimate interiors, fantastical exteriors and landscapes, and always a masterful blend of vivid colors and unusual shapes. Ordinary objects, landscapes, or architecture through Lalonde’s paintbrush always metamorphosize into extraordinary visions. Welcome to the world of René Lalonde!

About the Artist
Artist John McCabe produces graphic illustrations that take a progressive spin on pop art. He typically takes influence from his music to create vibrant caricatures of people, places, and things significant to the industry. Growing up, one of the highlights for John when buying music is the artwork on the packages. Inspired by that, he created art for his first EP, and every subsequent release includes artwork for each single, plus a front and back cover for the record. "The pieces are normally tied or related to the lyrics of a particular song," shares John. "In the case where I have made a series structured around music, a unique narrative unfolds within each." As imaginative as he is, John usually paints from the island surface of his kitchen or the dining room table. His music studio also doubles as a work area where he does pre-sketches. John has had several profiles from VoyageLA, Shoutout LA, and Queen City Arts and Sounds. His record label has featured his works along with his eclectic music releases.
