About the Item
Andrey Schultz (1910-2006)
Andrey Schultz was a Latvian painter and museum worker.
Andrejs Schultz was born on May 14, 1910 in Miķeļtornis "Olmaņi" (now Tārgale parish) of Pope parish, Ventspils district, to the family of a Latvian Fričas Šulcs (*1886) from Zlēkā and a Livonian Anna (née Jūrman) (*1886). He studied at the Miķeļtornis school, then at the Ventspils gymnasium. From 1930 to 1938 he studied painting at the Latvian Academy of Arts in the landscape art studio of Professor Vilhelms Purvītis. He graduated from the academy with a diploma work - the painting "Rīga" (now owned by the Latvian National Museum of Art).
During his studies, he was actively involved in the "Green Land" unit of the Latvian Academy of Arts.
"His ability to search for the new and go into the unknown is amazing", this is what Imants Ziedonis wrote about A. Schultz in his book "Kurzemīte".
A. Schultz did not abandon painting even during the period of founding and managing museums, but he resumed organizing larger solo exhibitions in the 1980s. In his lifetime, he painted around 3,000 works, which have been exhibited in Germany (Straszunde), France (Lyon), Canada (Ottawa) and several times in neighboring countries Estonia and Lithuania.
