Boats at the Eaux-Vives Harbor, Geneva and the Jura, Oil on Canvas, circa 1950

Located in Genève, GE

Boats at the Eaux-Vives Harbor, Geneva – Mid-Century Swiss Oil Painting Illegible signature This atmospheric oil on canvas depicts a peaceful view of the Eaux-Vives harbor in Geneva, with a group of small sailing boats and pleasure craft resting on the calm waters of Lake Geneva. Painted by an unidentified artist and bearing an indistinct signature, the work captures the quiet character of Geneva's lakeside during the mid-20th century. The composition is particularly appealing for its luminous and harmonious palette. Soft shades of pale blue, grey and cream dominate the lake and sky, while touches of ochre, rust red and orange animate the boats in the foreground. Their elongated reflections shimmer gently across the surface of the water, introducing movement into an otherwise tranquil scene. The artist employs fluid, economical brushwork, simplifying the forms of the boats and surrounding architecture while retaining a strong sense of atmosphere and perspective. The darker vessel and tall mast at the right provide a vertical counterpoint to the predominantly horizontal composition, while the distant shoreline and hills dissolve into soft blue-grey tones. Rather than concentrating on precise nautical detail, the painter focuses on light, reflections and the serene atmosphere of Lake Geneva, giving the work a distinctly Post-Impressionist sensibility. The Eaux-Vives waterfront and its harbor have long been emblematic subjects for Geneva artists, offering changing views of the lake, boats and surrounding landscape. This charming painting belongs to that tradition of Swiss lakeside landscape painting. With its understated palette and timeless subject, the work would integrate beautifully into both traditional and Mid-Century interiors. Indistinctly signed lower right. Oil on canvas. A Vintage 1950s Pastel & Charcoal Drawing of a Hockey Game by Francis Chapin

By Francis Chapin

Located in Chicago, IL

Perfect for any hockey enthusiast! A dynamic 1950s pastel and charcoal on paper drawing of a hockey game by artist Francis Chapin. Artwork size: 9 x 12 inches; Matted size: 14 x 18 inches. Estate stamped on reverse. Provenance: Estate of the Artist. Francis Chapin, affectionately called the “Dean of Chicago Painters” by his colleagues, was one of the city’s most popular and celebrated painters in his day. Born at the dawn of the 20th Century in Bristolville, Ohio, Chapin graduated from Washington and Jefferson College near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania before enrolling at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1922. He would set down deep roots at the Art Institute of Chicago, exhibiting there over 31 times between 1926 and 1951. In 1927 Chapin won the prestigious Bryan Lathrop Fellowship from the Art Institute – a prize that funded the artist’s yearlong study trip to Europe. Upon his return to the United States, Chapin decided to remain in Chicago, noting the freedom Chicago artists have in developing independently of the pressure to conform to pre-existing molds (as was experienced by artists in New York, for example). Chapin became a popular instructor at the Art Institute, teaching there from 1929 to 1947 and at the Art Institute’s summer art school in Saugatuck, Michigan (now called Oxbow) between 1934 – 1938 (he was the director of the school from 1941-1945). Chapin’s contemporaries among Chicago’s artists included such luminaries as Ivan Le Lorraine Albright...
