About the Item

MICHAEL CANNEY (1923-1999) RHINOCEROS Etching with aquatint and plate tone 1947, signed and dated Sheet Height 14.5 cm Length 21cm. In a cream mount within a burr walnut moulded frame Height 35, Length 30, Depth 2.5cm In 1947 Canney was studying illustration under Betty Swanwick at Goldsmiths’ College School of Art in London. This work is inspired by Albrecht Durer's famous woodcut of 1515. The animal in Dürer's print was a gift from an Indian sultan to King Manuel of Portugal and was the first to have been seen in Europe for nearly 1500 years. The King donated the rhino to Pope Leo X but the beast died en route to Italy. Durer never saw a rhino and based his famous print upon a sketch and a descriptive letter. BIOGRAPHY Michael Canney’s work progressed through a variety of styles during his life, from traditional landscapes to abstract works, pure white reliefs and hard-edged, mathematically based constructivist pieces. For many years he combined his artistic endeavours with work as an art gallery curator, educator, writer and broadcaster. Born in Falmouth, Cornwall, Canney took an early interest in art, studying extensively in the county. In the early 1940s he encountered the primitive painter Alfred Wallis and the new generation of artists, ‘the St Ives School’, including Barbara Hepworth (with whom he worked in 1959), Ben Nicholson, Naum Gabo and Bernard Leach. During war service in Italy he met Giorgio de Chirico. On his return, he completed his art training at Goldsmiths’ College, London, where contemporaries included Bridget Riley, Mary Quant, Albert Irvin and Molly Parkin. He moved back to Cornwall In 1956 to become curator of Newlyn Art Gallery, where he organised a visit by Mark Rothko in 1959. After teaching at the University of California in 1965, he was invited by Paul Feiler to become a lecturer at the Royal West of England College of Art in Bristol, later part of Bristol Polytechnic, where he taught until 1983. He then relocated to Italy, where his oil paintings drew on a new, more vibrant colour palette. In 1992 he moved from Italy to France, then finally to Devizes, in Wiltshire, where he continued to paint and make constructions and reliefs. Ill health forced him to stop painting in the late 1990s. His final alkyd oil paintings and constructions were brought together for a posthumous exhibition at the Fine Art Society in London in 2007. Since his death, interest in Canney’s work has increased, with the realisation that he was an important participant in the Cornish art scene of the mid-20th century, alongside artists such as Peter Lanyon, Patrick Heron, William Scott, Roger Hilton, Terry Frost, Paul Feiler, Bryan Wynter, Denis Mitchell, Wilhelmina Barns-Graham, Alex Mackenzie and John Wells, among others.

L'inspiré Self Portrait Marc Chagall Valentina Vava Lithograph 1963 Mourlot 398
By Marc Chagall
Located in Eversholt, Bedfordshire
Inspiration or L'inspiré - The artist and his wife, self-portrait. This is a self-portrait of the great artist, depicting him as lost in thought before one of his paintings, which is apparently related to his home country Russia, as suggested by the small figure in the lower right of the work. Chagall’s wife Valentina (“Vava”), who was also from Russia, is looking over his shoulder, full of longing. The small surreal elements that are characteristic of Chagall’s paintings are also present here: the silhouettes of the houses that seems to stick out of the painting and a figure with a flute or trombone standing on its head. Chagall Lithographe, Volume II of the catalogue raisonné of Chagall's lithographic work, see Mourlot 398, 1957-1962, Paris 1963, imprinted by Imprimerie Mourlot for the publisher André Sauret. A lithographic plate from the catalog that was published in 10,000 copies. Condition : Excellent Set inside a cream mount bearing brass cartellino Visible sheet size length 23cm, Height 31.50cm In a carved and gilded frame Frame size Length 44cm, Height 55.5cm The reverse with a paper label in Japanese Provenance : Private Collection, purchased with Lovers in Grey
