About the Item
"The House That Aloe Built" from Kiraly's Florida Suite is a serigraph on paper, signed 'John Kiraly' lower right and numbered CLVIII/CC lower left. The image size is 19 x 20.75 inches and the framed dimensions are 32 x 34 inches. From the edition of 500 (there were also 250 Arabics, 40 APs and 10 HCs). Framed in a contemporary black frame.
Martin Lawrence Galleries is an affiliate of Kiraly's publisher Chalk & Vermilion Fine Arts. This print is therefore as new, with no prior ownership, coming straight from the publisher.
With The House That Aloe Built, John Kiraly captures the quiet charm and sunlit rhythm of coastal Florida life. This serene scene centers on a small beachside cottage—its pastel shutters, decorative trim, and weathered textures evoking the easy elegance of historic Caribbean–influenced architecture. Surrounded by sand, sky, and sea, the house becomes both a destination and a moment of stillness.
Kiraly’s crisp, luminous palette amplifies the scene’s sense of calm. Soft corals, pale aquas, and cool violets sit against a brilliantly rendered blue sky that seems to shift with passing light. Subtle details—the fluttering flag, a waiting deck chair, the aloe plant bursting with color—enrich the composition without overwhelming its simplicity. As in much of Kiraly’s work, the balance of structure and open space invites the viewer to imagine stepping directly into the setting.
The precision of the serigraph brings out the delicate textures of stucco, weathered wood, and drifting sand, all hallmarks of Kiraly’s meticulous approach. Yet the overall effect remains relaxed and inviting. This is a place that feels lived in, sun-warmed, and ready to welcome anyone seeking a moment away from the pace of everyday life.
The House That Aloe Built reflects Kiraly’s deep affection for tropical environments and his ability to translate them into composed, uplifting images. As part of the Florida Suite, it celebrates the region’s distinctive coastal atmosphere—a blend of gentle color, bright light, and understated beauty that makes the work a natural fit for contemporary interiors.
John Kiraly (American, b. 1943)
New York–born and Florida-raised artist John Kiraly is celebrated for his lush, dreamlike visions of tropical architecture. Best known for the large-format serigraphs he created in the late 1980s and 1990s, Kiraly transforms verandas, pavilions and secret courtyards into immersive escapes filled with palms, orchids and cascading water. His meticulously crafted prints turn any interior into a sunlit terrace overlooking the sea.
Kiraly moved from New York to Florida as a child and later studied art at the University of Miami on a full scholarship, working under painters John Clinkenburg and Eugene Massin. Restless in the classroom, he left to travel through Europe, Central and South America before settling in the Bahamas, where he opened his own gallery and absorbed the saturated light and exuberant plant life that would define his mature work. In 1973 he relocated to Key West, beginning a lifelong exploration of tropical houses, gardens and waterfronts as his primary subject.
Throughout the 1990s, Kiraly developed an instantly recognizable style: crisp, idealized “tropical realist” scenes in which arcades, fountains and tiled terraces sit amid dense foliage and moonlit skies. Working in complex, multi-color serigraphy, he produced richly layered prints such as Celebration, Positano Moon, Temple of the Butterflies and Fortune Teller. These intricately printed limited editions have remained sought after by collectors who love Key West, the Mediterranean and other tropical destinations like Italian coastal towns, Carribean courtyards and lush Brazilian gardens.
Today, Kiraly’s work speaks directly to collectors who want interiors that feel like a permanent vacation. The generous scale of his serigraphs, their intricate detail and layered color, and their sense of cinematic escape make them ideal statement pieces for coastal homes, contemporary spaces in need of warmth, or anyone with a love of travel and tropical light. Each edition captures the atmosphere of a private paradise while offering the craftsmanship and scarcity serious collectors expect.
