This rare exhibition poster features Pierre Bonnard’s La Terrasse, created around 1918–1920, and published as part of the Collection of European Masters for the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen by Achenbach Editions. This edition is the text version, with artist and series information printed beneath the image, as originally issued.
Drawn from the museum’s celebrated holdings, this poster reflects the institution’s commitment to presenting both permanent and temporary exhibitions devoted to modern and international masters, including works by Kandinsky, Picasso, and leading Expressionist and Impressionist painters.
In La Terrasse, Bonnard reveals his unmistakable gift for creating light out of darkness. Using a palette of deep browns, greens, violets, and warm oranges, he layers shadow and color until the composition glows from within. Rather than painting light directly, Bonnard allows it to emerge through subtle contrasts, transforming an intimate garden view into a luminous, atmospheric world. The terrace motif was one of Bonnard’s recurring subjects in his later years, capturing both interior quietude and the shimmering openness of the landscape beyond.
