About the Item
Somos Puente (we are the bridge), shows one of the bridges over the Los Angeles River, dividing Hispanic East Los Angeles from the rest of the city. Downtown Los Angeles and mountains form the background. Daniel Gonzalez Is a Chicano artist who was raised in Los Angeles, and received his training at the California College of Arts and Crafts. He also apprenticed with Artemio Rodriguez at La Mano Press.
Artist statement:
“My life has been shared between two countries, the United States and Mexico. I’ve experienced the hard rural life of my parents in Mexico and the dangerous and fragmented life of the inner city. I am a person made up from experiences from both of these worlds. I am Mexican but I am also American and I can slip between these two worlds with ease and exist in both simultaneously. Culture does not honor borders. Culture is about change and growth.
My work is inspired by the folk stories that my parents and grandparents have passed on. I have a desire to invent and share my own narratives and vision through printmaking. I want to be able to communicate through the image an invitation to tell a new story to be told or an old one to be remembered."

An hommage to all those immigrants who die on the journey as they seek asylum in new countries.
As a cultural activist/artist/printmaker, Juan Fuentes has dedicated his career to being part of a global movement for social change. His works address issues relating to local communities of color, social justice, and international struggles for liberation.
The turbulent times of the 70’s set the tone for Fuentes' approach to creating social art. The Chicano, African American, Middle Eastern, Asian and Native American struggles for equality, peace and justice helped shape the themes that recur in his art.
His development and introduction to silkscreen printing by mentors such as Rupert Garcia and Malaquias Montoya guided his subsequent community and political poster involvement.
Fuentes' relief printing process follows closely the social realist tradition of Latin American artists such as Jose Guadalupe Posada...
