About the Item

“A Landscape For Bob, 2013” by Richard Mayhew (American, 1924-2024). This luminous print is a classic example of Mayhew’s mature approach to landscape, built entirely through bands of saturated color rather than literal description. A cool blue sky gives way to layered greens, then to a glowing expanse of yellow and rich orange, creating a sense of depth and movement across the surface. The image reads as a serene landscape drawn from memory rather than observed. This work is a color screenprint on Arches paper and is hand signed and numbered (87/90) in the lower right and left. It is unframed. Size: 18 inches tall by 24 inches wide (image) 22.5 inches tall by 30.25 inches wide (sheet) Provenance: Private collection, CA; Acquired from the above About the artist: Committed to the idea that art can play a role in racial equality, Richard Mayhew creates emotionally evocative landscapes that often feature a nondescript, solitary tree. Once a regular at the Cedar Bar, a bohemian hangout in New York City, he developed his improvisational approach from the Abstract Expressionists he met there, conceiving of painting as something akin to jazz. Though he traversed the United States by car to study different environments, his gestural process of pouring paint onto a canvas and working it into lush fields of color drives his practice. “Landscape has no space, no identity,” Mayhew once said. “It allows the painting to be about emotion.” In his earlier work, Mayhew limited his landscapes to a spare palette, but in the mid-1970s he began incorporating bold colors into his work. Condition: Excellent overall condition. Roughly cut edges, as originally issued. Faint handling marks in the margins.
