About the Item

Artist: Warrington Colescott Title Out My Garden Window Year: 1969 Medium: Color drypoint, soft-ground etching, and aquatint, with roulette, vibrograver, à la poupée inking, found letterpress plates, and relief rolls through stencils. Dimensions: 22.5” x 32” inches Edition: Signed, titled, and numbered 9/30 About the Artist Warrington Colescott (1921–2018) was a celebrated American printmaker known for his politically charged, darkly humorous satirical works. Born in Oakland, California, he studied at the University of California, Berkeley, before serving in World War II. He later became a professor of art at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he played a key role in advancing printmaking techniques. Colescott’s works often delve into the absurdities of politics, war, and American culture, blending historical events with contemporary themes. His technical mastery in printmaking allowed him to experiment with various processes, from etching to relief printing, often layering techniques to create richly detailed compositions. His work is held in major collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the Art Institute of Chicago. In Out My Garden Window, Colescott offers a window—both literal and metaphorical—into the turbulent landscape of the late 1960s, capturing the complexities of societal conflict with a keen satirical edge.
