Jean Francois Raffaëlli
Original Jean Francois Raffaelli Etching of a Hat Salesman

1895

About the Item

Jean-François Raffaëlli (French, 1850-1924) Le Marchand de Habits, 1895 Etching and drypoint Sight: 6 x 4 in. Framed: 12 x 9 3/4 x 3/4 in. Initialed lower left in plate: R This etching is recorded as catalogue reference Delteil 24. Jean Francois Raffaelli was born in Paris on April 20, 1850. Before dedicating himself to painting, Raffaelli was an actor and played in the Lyric Theater. He then entered Jean Leon Gerome's studio and made his debut at the Paris Salon of 1870. At first he painted genre pictures and then in 1879, he began doing picturesque views of quaint Paris neighborhoods. After executing a few portraits, notably those of "Edmond de Goncourt"" and "Clemenceau", he resumed to genre painting and made a serious effort to reproduce scenes of middle-class life. He participated in the get-togethers at the Cafe Guerbois, where Degas, against the wishes of the other members of the group, forced Raffaelli's acceptance at the impressionist exhibitions of 1890 and 1891. He had an admittedly somber palette, which was in absolute contradiction to the typical impressionists and he would later lighten his palette before the end of his life. More careful with his drawing than color, Raffaelli made a preliminary drawing in black and white of most of his canvases. He also did Paris landscapes, and in this manner he reached a large public. His typical scenes of Paris are accurately seen and expressed with spirit. His landscapes of the city's slums and fortifications created their own genre and perpetuate to this day our memory of this strange "no man's land' which has since disappeared. 19th Century Engraving by American Impressionist Herman Hyneman
By Herman Hyneman
Located in New York, NY
Herman Hyneman (American, 1849-1907) Untitled, c. 1880 Engraving Sight: 13 x 8 1/2 in. Framed: 26 1/2 x 20 1/2 x 3/4 in. Signed bottom The following is from Peter Jung who credits "a friend named Jeff Gold on Long Island." Herman N. Hyneman (1849 - 1907) was born in 1849 to one of the most prominent Jewish families in Philadelphia. Unlike most Jewish families of the time, his embraced and encouraged his artistic talent. In 1874, Hyneman followed his first cousin Moses Ezekiel, National Academy member, to Europe to study. They first went to Germany and then to France where Hyneman began eight years of study with Leon Bonnat, the French Master. In Paris, the twenty-five year old Hyneman resided in a studio building at 75 Boulevard Clichy, with expatriates Frederic Arthur Bridgeman, Charles Sprague Pearce, Milne Ramsey, and Edwin Blashfield. Hyneman was clearly exposed to the works of these more experienced artists, as well as that of Walter Gay. In 1879, one of Hyneman's genre paintings, entitled "Desdemona", was accepted into the Paris Salon. That painting received favorable reviews both in Europe, and later in Philadlephia where it was exhibited alongside the works of other Philadelphia Artists exhibiting at the Salon that included Thomas Eakins, Pearce, Edward May...

Aegidius Sadeler II Engraving "Petronia, First Wife of Vitellius, Roman Emperor"
By Aegidius Sadeler II
Located in New York, NY
Artist: Aegidius Sadeler II Petronia, First Wife of Vitellius, from set of Roman Emperors and Empresses, c. 16th-17th century Engraving Publisher: Marcus Christoph Sadeler Sight: 15 1/4 x 10 3/4 in. Framed: 19 3/4 x 15 1/4 x 1 in. This image was conceived in the 16th century by Aegidius Sadeler II and published by Marcus Christoph Sadeler. It is unclear when the present version was executed. Aegidius Sadeler or Aegidius Sadeler II[1] (1570–1629) was a Flemish engraver who was principally active at the Prague court of Rudolf II, Holy Roman Emperor and his successors. Sadeler was born in Antwerp in the Sadeler family of print dealers and engravers. He was the son of Emmanuel de Sayeleer and the nephew of Aegidius I, Jan I en Raphael Sadeler.[2] He was trained by his uncle Jan I and became a member of the Antwerp Guild of St. Luke in 1589. He was active in Munich the next year in 1590, in Rome in 1593, in Naples and then again in Munich in 1594–1597. From 1597 he settled in Prague where he became court engraver for Rudolf II and made engraved portraits of notables and engravings after artworks there, most notably paintings by Bartholomeus Spranger, Roelant Savery, Hans von Aachen, Giuseppe Arcimboldo, and sculptures by Giambologna and Adriaen de Vries. His early engravings were mostly faithful copies of works by Albrecht Dürer in the Imperial collection and copies of paintings by notable Italian painters such as Raphael, Tintoretto, Parmigianino, Barocci and Titian or by Northern painters who worked there, such as Paul Bril and Denys Calvaert. In Prague he also engraved portraits of the notables of Rudolf's court, and collaborated with Spranger, Joseph Heintz the Elder, Jacobus Typotius and his friend Anselmus Boece de Boodt (1550-1632), Rudolf II's gemologist and physician.[3] After Rudolf II died he enjoyed the favour and protection of the two succeeding Emperors, Matthias and Ferdinand II.[4][5] According to Michael Bryan...
