Lehmann's painting dates to 1869 when Reuters was 53 years old.
Paul Julius de Reuters (1816-99) was a German entrepreneur and later naturalized British citizen. He was the pioneer of telegraphy and news reporting was journalist and media owner, the founder of Reuters news agency.Rudolf Lehmann (1819 - 1905) was a painter and author born in Hamburg, Germany. In 1866 he settled in London where he painted his best known portraits.
Thomas Oldham Barlow (1824-1889) was a highly regarded English engraver.
