About the Artist: Edward (Eduardo) Chavez (1917–1995) was a prominent American modernist painter, sculptor, and muralist born in Wagonmound, New Mexico. He studied at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center under Boardman Robinson and Frank Mechau and gained early acclaim for his WPA-era murals across the American West. After serving in World War II, Chavez joined the vibrant art community in Woodstock, New York, where he lived and worked alongside artists like Fletcher Martin and Mitchell Siporin. His work reflects a unique blend of abstraction, surrealism, and American modernism, often exploring the human form and spiritual themes. Chavez received major honors during his career, including a Tiffany Foundation Grant (1948), a Fulbright Fellowship (1951), and the Childe Hassam Award (1953). He also taught at the Art Students League and served as a visiting professor at Syracuse University and Colorado College. His work was exhibited at MoMA, the Whitney Museum, and PAFA, and is held in notable collections including the Library of Congress and the Detroit Institute of Arts. His public murals remain on view in locations throughout Texas and Colorado.

A long-time resident of Colorado Springs and member of the National Society of Mural Painters, Bransby received a doctorate of humane letters from the University of Colorado (1997) and a lifetime achievement medal from Colorado College (1998).
