Widows and Maidens #5
By Sherry Owens
Located in New Orleans, LA
Sherry Owens
Windows and Maidens #5, 2019
Bronze, patina, crepe myrtle, dye, milk paint, wax
9 1/4 x 14 1/4 x 9 inches
For over 30 years, sculptor Sherry Owens has used the sinewy crepe myrtle tree to tell her story of the Texas landscape, death, renewal, beauty, and of today’s growing environmental concerns. Remnants of personal stories, visions and observations in nature are the driving forces in her work. She believes that what we see and do in our daily lives leaves a mark on our planet. It is the direct impact of human activities on the natural world, which is visualized in her artistic practice. She creates connections with nature using crepe myrtle trees found along the side of the road. Each stick is hand-carved and cut to fit, then laid in place and secured with a small myrtle peg. What takes precedence in the laborious process is the importance of detail and evidence of the artist’s hand and her interaction with the materials.
Sherry Owens is a native Texan, currently living and working in Dallas, TX. She received a BFA from Southern Methodist University. Recent Texas solo exhibitions include The Grace Museum; Cris Worley Fine Arts; Martin Museum of Art; Art Museum of Southeast Texas; and a two-person site-specific installation at the Umlauf Sculpture Garden & Museum. She was also included in recent exhibitions at the Amon Carter Museum of American Art, TX and the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, LA. She has exhibited internationally in Austria, Denmark, Germany, Greece, India, Japan, Peru, and Turkey. Her work is currently on view in the Ground Zero 360 Remembrance Exhibition at the Museum of Biblical Art...

Vela
By Alex Corno
Located in Dallas, TX
In his abstract constructions, Alex Corno does not make art to repeat what is visible, to paraphrase Klee’s affirmation. He uses the formal language of materials and space: opposing thin arcs, rods, and loops with weighty rectilinear forms to achieve a dynamic balance. Corno welds his iron and stainless steel sculptures in a diverse range of scales, from small interior works to monumental garden...

Square Wood Window Sculpture
By David Nash
Located in Houston, TX
Organic sculpture by famous sculptor David Nash of a tree trunk that has been shaped into a square with a concentric square cut out in the middle.
Artist Biography:
David Nash is a British sculptor and Land artist and works primarily with natural materials and live trees. His wooden sculptures are made using heavy equipment including chainsaws and blowtorches, morphing trees into unexpected shapes such as his Oculus Block (2010), a melding of two Eucalyptus stumps into a solid square. Born on November 14, 1945 in Esher, England, he attended the Kingston College of Art and later the Chelsea School of Art. Among his first and best-known works is Ash Dome (1977), for which the artist planted a circle of ash trees to form a wooden dome...

Untitled Triptych
By Eric Johnson
Located in Santa Monica, CA
Eric Johnson creates enigmatic and sensual abstract sculptures that are constructed with pigment, wood and resin. Johnson’s work seamlessly unites two traditions of Southern California art - the sleek and sexy aesthetic of the Finish Fetish movement and the organic and elegant tradition of woodworking. His handcrafted pieces are sheathed in resin skins, which often reveal glimpses of the wooden architectures encased within. Endlessly fascinated by physics and science, Johnson’s references range from cosmology and astrophysics to the human form.
Johnson’s work is deeply personal - in addition to drawing inspiration from his ancestral boat-building heritage (which is Norwegian, Scottish and Cree Native...
