About the Item
"The Moon" (2021) by Jan R Carson is an original abstract figurative wall installation that measures 64 x 32 inches with a depth of 3 inches. This piece was created with silk, stitched together and stretched over a light box.
Jan R. Carson works with silk in both sculptural and two-dimensional forms. Her textile art is created from fragments of silk through process-driven techniques; her sculptures are crafted from silk and fine gauge stainless-steel wire. Her work is rooted in transformation and the motions of growing, shifting, and becoming. Through the use of ephemeral imagery, she distills moments of beauty and disintegration to capture the delicate interplay between loss and renewal.
Jan’s studio is located in Loveland, Colorado. She received an MFA in Fibers from Colorado State University. Her work has been commissioned by Kaiser Permanente, Centura Health, and Rideout Cancer Center, among others. She was awarded the Grand Prize in the Arrow Five Years Out Challenge (2018) for her pairing of textile art and LED light. Her art is featured in the books Dimensional Cloth: Sculpture by Contemporary Textile Artists by Andra F. Stanton and Bojagi: Design and Techniques of Korean Textile Art by Sara Cook. Her five-paneled illuminated work, The Screaming Dreams of Flowers, is now held in the permanent collection of the City of Loveland, Colorado.
